‘Honoured’ – Manchester bar reacts after winning UK Bar of the Year
Manchester cocktail bar Schofield’s has shared its absolute honour at being awarded not one but two prestigious gongs at one of the UK’s biggest bar awards ceremonies.
Shortlisted for no less than four awards in all, the sophisticated cocktail bar was awarded both ‘Bar of the Year’ and ‘New Bar of the Year’ at the Class Bar awards ceremony this week – making history as the first venue to ever win both.
Attending a glitzy awards ceremony on Tuesday night, the understated cocktail den beat London’s A Bar with Shapes for a Name and Tayer + Elementary, as well as Leeds’ Tabula Rasa, to take home two of the ceremony’s biggest awards.
It’s a coup for Bury-born brother Joe and Daniel Schofield, who have only recently opened the sleek city centre cocktail bar – taking over landmark Manchester boozer The Old Grapes last year.

Since then, they’ve gone from strength to strength – with Schofield’s first appearing at number 16 on the 2022 Top 50 Cocktail Bars List, and now this.
Sharing their news on Instagram, Schofield’s wrote: “We are honoured to receive Bar of the Year and New Bar of the Year at the prestigious CLASS Bar Awards, and be the first bar to ever win both.
“We would like to take this opportunity to thank our team, for constantly giving 100% to our goal of providing hospitality to our guests.

As well as Schofield’s, brothers Joe and Daniel also have a second cocktail bar, Atomeca, on Deansgate Square and recently revealed plans to open a third underneath Gary Neville’s Stock Exchange Hotel.

Schofield’s wasn’t the only Manchester bar to take home an award on the night.

Mecanica, the opulent Swan Street bar with a menu inspired by hotels from around the world, also took home a gong from the Class Awards on Tuesday.
Bartender Elena Wright has only been in the industry for a year, but that didn’t stop her from being awarded the ‘Emerging Bartender of the Year’ award at this year’s Class Bar Awards ceremony.
The annual awards, organised by leading industry publication Class, celebrate the very best of the UK’s bartending talent, with further categories including Bar Manager of the Year, Front of House Star of the Year, Bar Employer of the Year, Social Media Presence of the Year and Sustainable Practices Award.

Manchester Airport reveals shocking list of 400 items confiscated by security in just one morning

Manchester Airport has revealed a shocking list of almost 400 items confiscated by security staff in just one morning.
And honestly, you won’t believe some of the things people’ve tried to take on a plane.
With the Easter break drawing to a close now across Greater Manchester, and children throughout the region getting ready to return to the classroom, Manchester Airport is urging all passengers travelling during the final few days of the school holidays to make sure they know the hand luggage rules before boarding the plane.
It comes after 22 pairs of scissors, eight toy guns, two blow torches, and even a couple of packs of darts, were just some of the goods confiscated at security gates in just one morning.
According to security staff, the most-confiscated item, by far, was the cigarette lighter – with 284 of them handed in over the course of the morning.

Passengers are permitted to carry one lighter with them, as long as it fits into a clear resealable plastic bag and contains under 100ml of liquid, but bringing through multiple lighters is not allowed, and this is what led to so many people having to turn them in.
As well as the lighters, scissors, toy guns, blow torches, and packs of darts, some of the other items confiscated on the morning include five multi-tools, four corkscrews, two hacksaws, 12 cans of deodorant, and even a hammer… yes, an actual hammer.
Two large soft drinks bottles, a bottle of shower gel, and a one-litre bottle of vodka were a few of the other shocking confiscations.

“We want passengers to feel like they’re beginning their holidays here at Manchester Airport,” commented Graham Matthews, who is Head of Terminal Security for Terminal 3 at Manchester Airport, on the list of confiscated items.
“Almost every passenger will wait for less than 15 minutes to get to security, so they can then get through and relax in the departure lounge within minutes of arriving here, but each time we have to pull a bag aside for a manual search, it takes several minutes.
“Every search adds up and can slow down the whole security process, not only for the passenger carrying a non-compliant item, but also for the passengers behind them in the queue.
“The variety of items we seized in just a couple of hours shows what we deal with every day, so if we can cut that, it will help everyone get through security even faster.”

Manchester United squad make magical memories as they meet fans for ‘Dream Day’

The Manchester United Foundation is continuing to carry out its regular schedule of wholesome community initiatives, with the club inviting a whole host of fans down to Carrington to meet the squad for ‘Dream Day’.
Now a biannual event on the United Foundation‘s calendar, Dream Days are heartwarming events that return every season, offering supporters travelling from all over the UK to come and meet with their footballing heroes and watch a first-team training session from the balcony of the Jimmy Murphy Centre.
This being the first of the year, fans sadly suffering from life-limiting illnesses arrived at the nearby training complex where they got to meet captain Bruno Fernandes, Man United and England centre-back Harry Maguire, club legend Wes Brown; the gaffer himself, Erik ten Hag, and many more.
As you can see from the pics, the players might have been a touch sweaty and damp from the Manc weather, but it didn’t stop them from making it a very special day for everyone in attendance.
For those who are a part of it, the United Dream Day initiative always lives up to its name.
With the likes of Brown and other members of the MUFC staff greeting guests and providing them with goodie bags and shirts before the real surprise, the kids’ and parents’ faces tell you everything you need to know.
Speaking on the importance of the day, Bruno Fernandes said, “It’s really important. Dream Days have been part of the club for so many years. We know that football can bring so much joy to the fans and I hope that today it’s been a special moment for them, and we’ve put smiles on their faces.”
Echoing his teammate, Norwegian striker Rasmus Hojlund went on to say: “I enjoy giving back. I’ve been a young fan myself and I know how it is, so it’s good that we can have days like this. They are so happy to see us, and we are happy to see them too.
“That’s what football is all about; it’s been a really positive experience.”
As for the fan side of things, 13-year-old Harley, who got to meet his idol Kobbie Mainoo, couldn’t get enough of the day, labelling it a “once-in-a-lifetime experience. Today was really fun. I was having surgery in January and now I’m here, it’s crazy.”
John, father of 18-year-old Lydia, told club media: “We’ve had an incredible day. Lydia has had the best time; it’s great memories for her and for our family. She’s United mad, football mad, and has been since a young age, so it’s just brilliant to be here today.”
A regular volunteer at Foundation events, previous club captain Maguire added: “It’s a day we all look forward to. Seeing so many smiles, you can feel the energy around the place. You go away from here feeling really proud to be able to play for this club; it’s great to meet so many fantastic people.”
The Foundation carried all kinds of charity work throughout the year and we look forward to many more wholesome scenes throughout 2024.
