      What to Know

      Critics Consensus

Man on Fire's solid action and top-shelf cast are undone by a relentlessly grim story that gets harder to take the longer it goes on.

James A Too long. Too violent. But does so much else right... like the supporting cast, music, and cinematography (despite some weird edits). Denzel and 9-year-old Dakota Fanning are the real highlights: with them, it's easy to be invested and you may just get a bit emotional during the film's final six minutes. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 04/24/24 Full Review David B This is a solid movie. It is very violent and grim, but it fits into the story properly. Denzel is as strong as ever in this role, and the rest of the cast is very good. It is about a man troubled by a violent past coming to terms with himself, and using that ruthlessness to save the young girl that he was protecting. The speech by the Walkin character to the Giannini character sums it all up. This is the script - not the final movie version, but close enough RAYBURN [Walkin] He’ll deliver more justice in a weekend, than ten years of your courts and tribunals. So stay out of his way. MANZANO [Giannini] I plan to. I’ll even help him if I can. He’s going to lead me to the ’The Dreamer’. Someone I want very badly. But I’d like to understand him. Give me that. RAYBURN Pinta Martin Ramos is just a number to you. Tragic, a public outcry, but a number. One more dead. MANZANO What was she to Creasy then? RAYBURN Light. At the end of a long, dark tunnel. Somehow, she showed him it was alright to live again. MANZANO And they took that away. RAYBURN A man can be an artist in anything. Stone, paint, words. Food. Anything if his soul is true to it. Creasy’s art is death. And he’s about to paint his masterpiece. The movie is about painting a masterpiece of death in service of retribution. It deserves a much higher rating. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 04/19/24 Full Review Shavon D Man of Fire has a music video-like cinematography with its quick, shaky, and loud feel. This way of shooting directs the audience to the chaos of the plot. The chemistry between Washington and Fanning is compelling as the two struggle to find some common ground. The story was interesting enough to capture and hold my attention even though some parts were indubitably expected. It's 2004 so you expect 2004 storytelling...did it age well? I think it did. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 04/05/24 Full Review Sean R Clearly the critics don't know the difference between a hole in the ground and one where the Sun don't shine. In their defense both are holes. It's a hard watch this film, but brilliantly acted and written. Denzel is a master and it's well worth the watch. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/04/24 Full Review Pamela H This is one of the most irritating movies I've seen in a while. Overly long, with a soundtrack that I had to keep muting, and killing for the fun of it. The pure fun of it. But don't just kill them, blow them up. Every time. Everyone overacts. D movie material. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 03/20/24 Full Review Michelle H Great movie!!! I cannot believe it didn't win more awards. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/20/24 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating
