  1. 1.

    Julian Morris

In Man in an Orange Shirt, Morris plays modern protagonist Adam, who struggles to find his place in a dating-app driven dating scene.

MASTERPIECE viewers will recognize Morris from our recent adaptation of Little Women—he played Laurie’s tutor (and Meg’s future husband) John Brooke.

Prior to that, Morris had recurring roles on several popular TV shows, including Pretty Little Liars, New Girl, and Once Upon a Time.

  2. 2.

    Vanessa Redgrave

Since her first film appearance in 1958, Vanessa Redgrave has been a staple of English stage and screen.

In Man in an Orange Shirt, Redgrave plays Adam’s grandmother, Flora—a woman of her time who has a complicated relationship with her past.

MASTERPIECE (and PBS) viewers may recognize Redgrave’s distinctive voice from Call The Midwife; she has been the show’s narrator (the voice of mature Jennifer Worth) for all seven seasons.

Additionally, Redgrave has appeared in numerous award-winning films, such as JuliaGirl, Interrupted, Lee Daniels’ The Butler, and Foxcatcher.

  3. 3.

    Oliver Jackson-Cohen

Man in an Orange Shirt‘s first story, the unrequited love of two gay men in 1940s England, is led by Jackson-Cohen, who plays Michael.

Eagle-eyed MASTERPIECE fans may remember Jackson-Cohen as the passionate artist Roddy, who had a short-lived affair with Rose Selfridge, in Mr. Selfridge.

  4. 4.

    Laura Carmichael

Actress Laura Carmichael, who plays Flora’s sister Daphne in the 1940s portion of Man in an Orange Shirt, no doubt looks familiar to MASTERPIECE viewers.

Carmichael is best known as underdog Crawley sister Lady Edith in the international hit Downton Abbey.

She has also appeared in several prestige drama films, including Madame Bovary (2014) and Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, alongside Gary Oldman, Colin Firth, and Benedict Cumberbatch.

  5. 5.

    David Gyasi

Actor David Gyasi plays Steve, the other half of Man in an Orange Shirt‘s modern romance. This performance marks his MASTERPIECE debut!

However, viewers may recognize Gyasi from his numerous appearances in popular films. He played Daniel in Annihilation, Lena’s (Natalie Portman) coworker; he also appeared in Interstellar as the hesitant physicist Romilly, alongside actor Matthew McConaughey.

  6. 6.

    Joanna Vanderham

Man in an Orange Shirt‘s drama is rooted in the conflict between Michael and his young bride Flora, who is caught between a stable life and a dangerous secret in 1940s England.

MASTERPIECE viewers will recognize Vanderham from 2013’s The Paradise, in which she played ambitious shopgirl Denise.

  7. 7.

    James McArdle

The title of Man in an Orange Shirt comes from a painting made by McArdle’s character, Thomas March, who struggles to hide his love for Michael.

On MASTERPIECE, McArdle played government man Ted Finch in the Page Eight and Salting the Battlefield installments of the Worricker trilogy.

As Man in an Orange Shirt airs in on MASTERPIECE, McArdle is currently starring on the London stage alongside Andrew Garfield and Nathan Lane in Tony Kushner’s Angels in America.

Man In An Orange Shirt airs Sunday night, June 17th, 2018 at 9/8c on MASTERPIECE on PBS.
