My first Maisie movie! I throughly enjoyed it. Ann Sothern as Maisie is a joy with her sass and wisecracking lines, but she's also equally sweet and caring. And the supporting cast of Lew Ayres and Maureen O'Sullivan was the icing on the cake!

Maisie is working in a carnival as a headless woman and loses her job due to a drunk Lew Ayers. He loans her his super fancy car so she can get back to Brooklyn. A cop recognizes the car, but doesn't recognize her so he arrests her for stealing the car. In the courtroom the next morning Ayers doesn't remember anything until she comes unhinged at the injustice of it all. Maisie finds herself working in a mansion with an impressive cast. Lew Ayres is a rich ne'er-do-well who inadvertently gets Maisie in trouble so, of course, he's forced to make recompense. But Maisie being the Maisie I love won't take money, only a job that pays her what's due, so she becomes a maid in his family's mansion. C. Aubry Smith, the butler, shows her the ropes and Maisie befriends Maureen O'Sullivan, Ayres' naive sister who is being taken advantage of by nearly everyone but especially her caddish fiancé played by Edward Ashley-Cooper.

Maisie takes many roles.... this time as a reluctant maid, experiencing upper-class problems, which is almost on par with 1st world problems. Ann Sothern is great, and I loved her little moments with C. Aubrey Smith, a man who usually played Lords and other higher-ups, here a beyond retirement-age butler naively loving the family he's always worked for. The rich kids ended up being too melodramatic for their own good and sort of took the joy out of things. But of course this Maisie makes it entertaining.
After a "Red Dust" Maisie and then a "Grapes of Wrath" Maisie comes this entry, which kind of plays like a "My Man Godfrey" Maisie.
Maisie (Ann Sothern) is offered a make-good maid's job by a drunken socialite (Lew Ayres). Here she meets his sister (Maureen O'Sullivan), who has invited all her rich and snotty friends to the mansion to celebrate her engagement. What ensues is a mess that a maid must clean up.
While this film doesn't reach the heights of the first film in the "Maisie" series, it does offer some decent laughs and a good heart. The cast is a big reason why I like this film more so than the second and third installments. You not only get Lew and Maureen, but also C. Aubrey Smith. Ann is lovely as "Maisie."
Well, if this isn't the best Maisie movie I have ever seen, I don't know what is! In all honesty, not sure any of the other Maisie movies could top this, though I have only seen four of them, I don't really see any of them reaching the heights of this one.
Not only is almost every single woman in this movie incredible beyond belief, they all speak their mind and tell it how it is, and I am so here for it. Another journey with Maisie (my third), in between the first Maisie film 2 years earlier and the 8th film 3 years later, and this feels like Maisie is a lot closer to the original Maisie, where she's not a quick-thinking character in bad situations that she has to deal with. I do think she's smart enough to not be quite as aggressive in a few of these situations (and, ironically, to also not be as passive in a particular scene), but most of this is still her being the most sensible person in the room and Ann Sothern does a good job of representing a general sort of moral offense at how the rich behave.
