Maia Chaka is a health and physical education teacher at Renaissance Academy in Virginia Beach. Chaka is an American trailblazing woman in the National Football League (NFL). On March 5, 2021, she was added to the NFL roster of game officials for the 2021 season, Chaka became the first Black woman in league history to be named to the NFL’s officiating staff. Talking about Chaka’s achievement, The National Football League (NFL) executive vice president of football operations, Troy Vincent, Sr., said. “Maia’s years of hard work, dedication, and perseverance — including as part of the NFL Officiating Development Program — have earned her a position as an NFL official

Prior to joining the National Football League (NFL), Chaka worked at the collegiate level, including stints in the Pac-12 Conference and Conference USA. In 2014, she was part of the NFL’s Officiating Development Program, which works to identify college officials who could leap the pros.

Talking about the achievement Chaka said that, “I am honored to be selected as an NFL official, But this moment is bigger than a personal accomplishment. It is an accomplishment for all women, my community, and my culture.” Chaka also made an appearance on NBC’s Today Show where she said that, “It didn’t really hit me until just now When I saw the introduction, I’m like, ‘This is really real,’ because this is just something that we’re just always taught to work hard for. Sometimes we just don’t take time to stop and smell our own roses.” She attended the Norfolk State University, where she graduated with a bachelor’s degree majoring in health, physical education, and exercise science.
