HubSpot has a great overall compensation package, amenities, and resources for employees. The framework for greatness exists, and with the right leadership, I believe the envisioned excellence will be attained.

        Cons

While HubSpot flaunts a truly impressive compensation package, top-notch amenities, and ample resources, there's an underlying sense that the organization is yet to realize its full potential. Regrettably, HubSpot appears to be a mere shell of the once-rumored #2 Best Place to Work. The initially touted culture serves as a tantalizing facade to lure in top talent, but as the veneer fades, a toxic underbelly of "high-performance" becomes increasingly apparent. What may seem like ones unbridled cynicism post-recruitment and during the theatrics of employee orientation soon reveals itself as a stark reality over time. In my brief two-year tenure, I witnessed an alarming level of turnover, layoffs, and burnout, surpassing the cumulative experiences of my multi-decade career. Remarkable individual contributors and stellar managers struggled against the tide, their efforts to foster an authentic company culture often thwarted. Exceptional leaders and contributors were, at times, driven away by the tenured and toxic gatekeepers, resulting in a very disheartening overall experience.

          Pros

Hubspot is a worldclass leader in CRM/Marketing/Sales software, and has really created a phenomenal platform as well as marketing strategy for the platform. #1 platform in the industry, so you've got a great platform to sell. Overall, great company culture despite the way my journey ended.

          Cons

I started in January, 2023 and was terminated the week after Thanksgiving, 2023. We all know tech sales have been a real challenge in 2023, but my experience at Hubspot may have prompted an exit from SaaS altogether. If we look at it from a numbers game, I was terminated at 86% attainment. I was struggling...had been for months. When I joined, I was told inbound should cover (approximately) 40-50% of quota, and the rest would be outbound. The reality? 10-20% each month. It was an uphill climb from day one. I know many reps who are also struggling and are looking for their next role elsewhere. I was anticipating starting PIP in December, I had joined a sales/tech coaching group, meeting w/ my manager 2x/week, meeting w/ high-performers and coming at it from every single angle I knew how all while it was taking an enormous toll on my mental health. Instead of PIP, HR joined my 1:1 with my manager and I was promptly let go. I admittedly wasn't super successful, but this was a really disappointing way to leave a company after I had invested so much time and energy and I never got a PIP to try to turn things around.

Sorry to hear things didn't end the way you had hoped at HubSpot and that the exit process was frustrating to you--we will continue to flag feedback to the sales org on how we balance performance and coaching timelines. -Katie

The product is best in class. The business outlook is fine as of now.

            Cons

Hubspot really was a best place to work at one time. Those of us who were there were lucky to have experienced that. I could write out a lot here, but it really boils down to: my experience is that hubspot cares about its employees and customers about as much as your average large corporation. It’s not the worst place to work, but it’s not an amazing place to work anymore. In my opinion, on average, employees seem a little unhappy and a bit disconnected from the mission. There are a lot of arbitrary KPIs to make up for lack of context/experience in some of leadership. Many who are coming from outside of hubspot and, in my experience, don’t necessarily understand what goes into the jobs of those around them. My experience is that you have to be ruthless or cut-throat to be successful. Cash compensation is on the lower end and there are many upcoming changes.

Thanks for the feedback here and for your candor. I think it's fair to say we need to ensure we focus on internal retention and promotion-it's something we've been talking a ton about of late, so rest assured it's top of mind, but I think you're right we can make it more clear and transparent to employees how we are prioritizing this. Appreciate you sharing our way so we can learn from this. -Katie

Great 'no-asshole policy' in hiring at individual contributor level, so you'll have great colleagues.

              Cons

Probably the worst company I've ever worked for, and the only reason I stayed there for almost five years is because of my team. Everything you read in 'Disrupted' is true: there is a huge 'in crowd' and the only way to get ahead or get anything done is to be a part of it. C-level knows this, and not only do they not do anything about it, they cultivate it. After the lay-offs of early 2023, which were handled in the worst way ever, it became a really bleak place to work. The pretence of HEART is going nowhere as those in power clearly have no heart. Brian Halligan's favorite phrase is "I want to build a company my grandchildren can be proud of". Well, pretty much everyone agrees that with HubSpot he's built nothing to be proud of.

                Cons

Very difficult quota attainment. High turnover. Extremely micromanaged. Very little comraderie. You are fighting other reps for accounts to work. This role is basically a BDR with some closing opportunities. You will get little to no inbound leads and nearly source every deal yourself. Very bad work/life balance. Expect to work nights and weekends to meet quota.

HubSpot is really leaning out its marketing department. If you like doing the job of three people — and get invigorated by the occasional layoff — I encourage your to apply. But seriously, though. What is going on? The CEO said no more layoffs in December and here we are, a few months later, with another silent layoff. And while there's no "right" way to do a layoff, they're very callous in how they do it. Out of respect for my colleagues, I will leave it at that. All that aside, you'll notice a common theme in all these reviews, and it's that your experience at HubSpot is largely dependent on your manager. Unfortunately, many people in management positions at HubSpot are not qualified. Another big call out if career growth. In my experience, you will get saddled with more and more work but your title and compensation will not budge. This is not a place to grow.

                    Cons

Culture is not as advertised. Everyone lives in their own world and is too busy for meaningful connection. Consistent on-target performance requires long hours. Inbound leads might make up 25% of what you ultimately close. Company has moved to full-cycle selling for all AE's. Sales management lives and dies by the "HubSpot selling method" and it has some really strong points... But by the end, almost every customer feels like they just left a used car dealership. Even if they got the car they wanted, it still feels gross. End of month is psychotic. Everyone is scrambling and losing their minds trying to get to quota. You'll get pressured to ignore a customer's timeline and bring deals in early so that someone else higher up can make quota. As you can imagine... there is alot of turnover.

Sorry to read you didn't have a great experience with us--we've done a fair amount to limit more internal meetings and added in person Flywheel Kickoff for this year so I'm hoping that has improved some of the feedback you referenced. Heard on sales methodology and inbound lead volume, appreciate you sharing that with us and flagging our way. Sincerely, Katie

                      Cons

I have been at hubspot 5 years. It was truly an amazing place to work. Things have taken a huge turn in the last year or so. Yamini cares alot more for investors then employees. Toxic Performance culture has taken over. Moving the goalposts on career growth to completely unreachable levels. You can completely kill yourself with work and management don't care or recognize you. This is leading to massive attrition, the best and brightest are moving on in huge numbers. The rest are left totally unmotivated and miserable

Sorry to hear of your frustration, particularly on performance culture. People are still very much free to give fours on reviews-we don't have a forced curve, we just want people to make full use of the ratings and to really push on the why behind whatever number is chosen, hence the focus on calibration. Appreciate you sharing the feedback, hard though it is to read. -Katie

                        Cons

I worked at HubSpot pre-Covid. The energy and support I felt from other HubSpotters way back when was amazing. It got the company through the hard early days of lockdown - then the surge in business that came right after. We supported each other through the good and the bad. HEART wasn't just a culture slogan but how most HubSpotters approached each other and their customers. But then something changed. "High performance culture" came in. Another way of saying we'll get rid of anyone for any reason we want. No more trying to lift up your fellow HubSpotter and supporting each other through challenges and tough times. Micromanagement took over and the vibe turned to Survivor. So many long time employees and leaders have left the company recently. It's become like any other big software company.

How probable is it to transition from a contract role to permanent employment? I'm nearing the end of my six-month contract, and while I enjoy my current position, I'm interviewing with other companies. I'm concerned about the possibility of being offered a full-time position just as I've secured another job elsewhere.
