Biography

Magdalene Sibylle von Sachsen-Weissenfels, was born on 2 September 1648 at Halle, the eldest child of August of Saxony (Sachsen), Duke of Sachsen-Weissefels (of the Albertine line of the family of Wettin) and his first wife Anna Maria von Mecklenburg-Schwerin.[1]

She married at Halle, on 14 November 1669, as his first wife, Friedrich, Hereditary Prince and from 1674 the Duke of Sachsen-Gotha as Friedrich I. He was the eldest surviving son of Ernst, Herzog von Sachsen-Gotha, and his wife, Elisabeth Sophie von Sachsen-Altenburg, (both of the Ernestine line of Wettin).[2]

They had the following eight children;[3]

  1. Anna Sophie, born 22 December 1670 at Gotha, married at Friedenstein Castle, Gtoha, 15 October 1691, Ludwig Friedrich I, Fürst von Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt;
  2. Magdalene Sibylle, born 30 September 1671 Gotha, died young 2 March 1673 at Altenburg;
  3. Dorothea Marie, born 22 January 1674 at Gotha, married there 19 September 1704, Ernst Ludwig, Duke of Sachsen-Meiningen;
  4. Friederike, born 24 March 1675 at Gotha, married at Zerbst, 25 May 1702, Johann August, Fúrst von Anhalt-Zerbst;
  5. Friedrich II, born 28 July 1676 at Gotha, succeeded his father as Duke von Sachsen-Gotha;
  6. Johann Wilhelm, born 4 October 1677 Gotha, died 15 August 1707 at the siege of Toulon;
  7. Elisabeth, born 7 February 1679 at Gotha, and died there aged less than 18 months, 22 June 1680;
  8. Johanna, born 1 October 1680 at Gotha, married 20 June 1702 at Strelitz, Adolf Friedrich II, Duke of Mecklenburg-Strelitz.

Magdalene died at Gotha on 7 January 1681,[4] about three months after giving birth to her last child. Her cause of death is unknown but giving birth to eight children in slightly less than eleven years might have been a factor. She was buried in the Fürstengruft (Princely cyrpt) in Schloss Friedenstein, Gotha[5]
