He married Maria Theresia von Österreich-Este Archduchess of Österreich-Este, Princess of Modena on 20 February 1868, in Vienna, Austria. They were the parents of at least 5 sons and 9 daughters. He died on 18 October 1921, in Sárvár, Vas, Hungary, at the age of 76, and was buried in Munich, Bavaria, Germany.
