Biography

Lucius Bentinck Cary, 10th Viscount of Falkland was born on 5 November 1803. He was the son of Captain Charles John Cary, 9th Viscount of Falkland and Christiana Anton. He married, firstly, Lady Amelia Fitz-Clarence, daughter of William IV Hanover, King of the United Kingdom and Dorothea Bland, on 27 December 1830. He married, secondly, Elizabeth Catherine Gubbins, daughter of Maj.-Gen. Joseph Gubbins, on 10 November 1859. He died on 12 March 1884 at age 80, without surviving issue.

He succeeded as the 10th Lord Carye [S., 1620] on 28 February 1809. He succeeded as the 10th Viscount of Falkland, of Falkland, co. Fife [S., 1620] on 28 February 1809. He gained the rank of Captain in the 7th Foot. He held the office of Lord of the Bedchamber to King William IV between 1830 and 1837. He held the office of Representative Peer [Scotland] from 1831 to 1832. He was created 1st Baron Hunsdon of Scutterskelfe, co. York [U.K.] on 15 May 1832. He held the office of a Lord in Waiting between 1837 and 1840. He held the office of Governor of Nova Scotia between 1840 and 1846. He held the office of Captain of the Yeomen of the Guard between 1846 and 1848. He held the office of Governor of Bombay between 1848 and 1853. He was appointed Knight Grand Cross, Hanoverian Order (G.C.H.)3 He was appointed Privy Counsellor (P.C.)3 On his death, his U.K. barony became extinct.
