*An Instant New York Times Bestseller!*
A memoir of love and loss, of being in the right place at the right time, and of the mysterious ways a beloved pet can bring people together, from CBS Sunday Morning News correspondent and multi-Emmy-Award-winning Martha Teichner.
There are true fairy tales. Stories that exist because impossible-to-explain coincidences change everything. Except in real life, not all of them have conventional, happily-ever-after endings. When Harry Met Minnie is that kind of fairy tale, with the vibrant, romantic New York City backdrop of its namesake, the movie When Harry Met Sally, and the bittersweet wisdom of Tuesdays with Morrie.
There’s a special camaraderie among early-morning dog walkers. Gathering at dog runs in the park, or strolling through the farmer's market at Union Square before the bustling crowd appears, fellow pet owners become familiar–as do the personalities of their beloved animals. In this special space and time, a chance encounter with an old acquaintance changed Martha Teichner’s world. As fate would have it, her friend knew someone who was dying of cancer, from exposure to toxins after 9/11, and desperate to find a home for her dog, Harry. He was a Bull Terrier―the same breed as Martha’s dear Minnie. Would Martha consider giving Harry a safe, loving new home?
In short order, boy dog meets girl dog, the fairy tale part of this story. But there is so much more to this book. After Martha agrees to meet Harry and his owner Carol, what begins as a transaction involving a dog becomes a deep and meaningful friendship between two women with complicated lives and a love of Bull Terriers in common. Through the heartbreak and grief of Carol’s illness, the bond that develops changed Martha’s life, Carol’s life, Minnie’s life, Harry’s life. As it changed Carol’s death as well.
In this rich and touching narrative, Martha considers the ways our stories are shaped by the people we meet, and the profound love we can find by opening our hearts to unexpected encounters.

Editorial Reviews
Review
“Teichner’s main themes are sure to warm readers in this cold coronavirus winter: the steadfast devotion between dogs and their owners, and the essential role friendship plays in sustaining both humans and their beloved pets … Teichner has learned that we all have the capacity to create and build new friendships and attachments at whatever age or stage of life. That such rewards are possible is the inspirational lesson for all the characters in ― and readers of ― this touching saga.”
―The Washington Post
"When Harry Met Minnie made me cry and made me dance with joy. It’s an exquisite tale about heartbreak and healing, critters and humans, and the little miracles life hands us when we need them the most."
―Jeannette Walls, New York Times bestselling author of THE GLASS CASTLE and HALF BROKE HORSES
"When Harry Met Minnie is a tour-de-force of storytelling. Martha Teichner not only charts the course of two remarkable friendships, between two people and two dogs, she invites us to consider our own relationships. The stars that had to align to put someone special in our life. This is a love story, masterful, warm and funny, heartfelt and heartbreaking. I absolutely loved this book."
―Louise Penny, New York Times bestselling author of All the Devils Are Here
“When Harry Met Minnie is a story of laughter and tears, of friendship and dogs. It shows us the loyalty and resilience of Bull Terriers―and of two women who love them. A book of generosity and hope for an era badly in need of both.”
―Jennifer Finney Boylan, author of GOOD BOY: My Life in Seven Dogs
“When Harry Met Minnie belongs on the shelf next to Travels with Charley and Marley and Me. But the unforgettable dogs we meet in these pages don’t just help the people in their lives, they save each other. Martha Teichner has written an extraordinary story filled with love and humor about the transformative power of friendship, among dogs and people, in the thick of life and at its end. I fell in love with Harry, Minnie, their humans, and this marvel of a book."
―Will Schwalbe, New York Times bestselling author of The End of Your Life Book Club and Books for Living
"The sweet ― if wrenching ― memoir is an ode to our dearest four-legged friends, and the people they lead us to."
―The Washington Post, "What to read in 2021 based on what you loved in 2020"

Anyone who has lost a beloved pet knows how heartwrenching the entire ordeal is. Since I had never owned a pet growing up, I sympathized with friends during their losses. Never had I truly understood the depth of such grief. Like Minnie, Zosia was a rescue, abandoned at an ASPCA shelter. Because she had run away twice, she was spayed and could not breed; thus, her owner did not want her. She also exhibited signs of abuse and was a mere 19 pounds. My son, who had been looking for just the right dog, did want her and the rest is history. He named her for his favorite polka, and the name certainly fit her personality. She typified the breed – stubborn, funny, and so lovable. We were lucky to have her in our lives for 13 ½ years, but this last year was difficult. She did not have cancer, but she suffered from many of the ailments Harry had – sensitive stomach, colitis, all sorts of bumps – but she remained spirited.
For me, Martha Teichner hit two sensitive issues – the loss of a pet and the loss of a friend. Three weeks before we lost Zosia, my brother unexpectedly passed away. Although he had survived cancer twice, he died within twelve hours after the diagnosis of an infected gallbladder and sepsis. He was my last sibling and I was devastated. When Zosia’s heart just gave out at the Emergency Vet Clinic that awful Monday morning, I felt my brother had taken her to keep him company, for he loved her as much as we had. I knew this was going to be a difficult read, and in spite of my own grief, I decided to read it anyway.
Very early into the book, I realized this was more than a story of dogs and friendships. It is about who we are as human beings and how we rise to help others in need because we love them. Teichner writes about coincidences and believes as I do that there are no coincidences. People and events are put in our paths for a reason and just like Frost’s “two paths,” our choices make “all the difference.” She makes her reader realize that such choices are worth the heartbreak, for they enrich our lives in ways we never realize at the time.
I cried profusely at the end of this book, mourning not only Carol and Harry, but the loss of my only brother and the dog that never tired of greeting me. Martha Teichner presents the reader with so many lessons, many difficult to face. She shows us how mortality is always peeking around the corner, indifferent to our plans. She reminds us to live in the present, to share the story of our lives with those we love. In the end, when Carol is faced with selling her valued possessions, the reader is reminded that those things are just that – the gear of life that must be left behind. But Carol doesn’t merely cast off her “stuff” – she bequeathes her most precious possessions to friends so they can enjoy what she loved, knowing a part of her is with them. We learn inheriting a good friend’s purse and the future telling of the story behind the purse assauges our grief!
When Harry Met Minnie is more than a simple story for dog lovers. As with all good stories, it is profound in its insightful depiction of the human condition and how love can make a difference – if are willing to take a chance.
You have to understand - serendipity is a real thing. My breed is Cardigan Welsh Corgis. When I lost my first one, I waited 3 years to get another one because my heart was so broken. Six months after my second one passed away in 2017, I decided instead of going to a breeder that I would rescue one. I had been involved in some rescue activities, albeit on a small scale. And I thought it was time to jump in all the way. I had been in contact with breed rescue a few times to assist with transport, so when I spoke to the rescue rep she said to me "you know, Cardis don't come along very often, you should fill out an application, just so you're on the list". So I did - and in it I said that I wouldn't be against adopting 2, if they had a bonded pair. I asked a friend to be a reference, but said that Cardis are rare, it could take a while. She laughed & said "right, they'll call you tomorrow!" and we both laughed. And they called the next day. With two 7 year old brothers/littermates. Who are sleeping in my living room as I write this. So yes, serendipity happens.
But this story is so much more than about Harry & Minnie. It's about the love of dogs and the love of friendship. It's about life and faith - taking that road, even if you know where it will lead in the end. This could have easily turned into one of those sob stories (not that I didn't cry a little), but it doesn't. I could hear Martha speaking the words as I read it, in that style that only she has. Get it. Read it.
I can’t say that this book made me wish to own a bull terrier. This breed has a very independent temperament and individuals can be extremely strong-willed, but they can be comically playful and fiercely loyal. This makes it a challenge as well as a joy to be a bull terrier’s human and it is clear that bull terrier lovers themselves are a unique breed!
This well-written book about two friends and their dogs was very touching, a heartwarming tearjerker that was actually two love stories in one. Besides Harry and Minnie’s story, the book featured the deep but tragically short friendship between Carol and Martha, two vibrant, creative, independent career women whose shared love for the bull terrier breed brought them together.
