Louis III the Bearded (German: Ludwig III. der Bärtige) (23 January 1378 - 30 December 1436) was the Elector Palatine from 1410 until 1436.

Life[]

Louis was born in 1378 as a son of the Elector Palatine and King of Germany Rupert III. Rupert died in 1410 and the Palatinate was divided between Louis and his three surviving brothers. As his elder brothers predeceased Rupert, Louis inherited the main partition and the electoral title. Louis did not attempt to succeed his father as King of Germany and instead supported Sigismund of the [[House of Luxembourg]. On 16 February 1415 he joined the Parakeet Society formed against Duke Louis VII of Bavaria-Ingolstadt. The society evolved into the Leage of Constance later that year, and together with King Sigismund it imprisoned Antipope John XXIII in Mannheim. Louis later supervised the execution of the Czech reformer John Hus on the 6th of July. In 1426 he undertook a pilgrimage to Jerusalem and returned seriously ill.

LRouis died in Heidelberg in 1436 and was buried in the city's church.
