Actor. He was an South African born actor, who made his Broadway stage debut in "Point Valaine" in 1934, receiving the New York Critics Circle Award. His first Hollywood movie was "The Flame Within" in 1935. Other film credits include "Anthony Adverse," "The Man in the Iron Mask," and "The Son of Monte Cristo." The first actor to play "The Saint," he had a lead role as Simon Templar in the 1938 film "The Saint in New York." He made at least 50 films. Born Louis Charles Hayward, he was educated in France and England. His acting career began on the stages of London theaters. His first British film was "Self Made Lady" in 1932. He immigrated to the United States after making about six British films. During World War II, he served in the United States Marine Corps, serving in a photographic unit. He helped to produce a documentary "With the Marines at Tarawa," which received the 1944 Academy Award for Best Documentary. For his military service, he received a Bronze Star. He was married for a time to actress Ida Lupino. They couple married in 1938 but after the war, their relationship changed, which followed with a divorce. He married three times, divorced twice, and had a son and a 30-marriage with his third wife.
