Parliament opened by Commission.

The Lord Chancellor acquainted the House, "That His Majesty, not thinking fit to be personally present here this Day, had been pleased to cause a Commission to be issued under the Great Seal, in order to the opening and holding of this Parliament."

Then Five of the Lords Commissioners, being in their Robes, and seated on a Form placed between the Throne and the Woolsack, The Lord Chancellor in the Middle, with The Lord Archbishop of Canterbury and The Lord Privy Seal on his Right Hand, and The Lord President and The Lord Steward on his Left; commanded the Gentleman Usher of the Black Rod to let the Commons know, "The Lords Commissioners desire their immediate Attendance in this House, to hear the Commission read."

Who being come;

The Lord Chancellor said,

"My Lords and Gentlemen of the House of Commons,

His Majesty, not thinking fit to be present here this Day in His Royal Person, hath been pleased, in order to the opening and holding of this Parliament, to cause Letters Patent to be issued under His Great Seal, constituting us, and several other Lords therein named, His Commissioners, to do all Things, in His Majesty's Name, on His Part necessary to be performed in this Parliament: This will more fully appear by the Letters Patent themselves, which must now be read."

Then the said Letters Patent were read by the Clerk as follow; (viz ^t.)

Directions to the Commons to choose a Speaker.

Then The Lord Chancellor said,

"My Lords, and Gentlemen,

"We have it in Command from His Majesty to let you know, That His Majesty will, as soon as the Members of both Houses shall be sworn, declare to you the Causes of His calling this Parliament; and it being necessary a Speaker of the House of Commons should be first chosen, it is His Majesty's Pleasure, that you, Gentlemen of the House of Commons, repair to the Place where you are to sit, and there proceed to the Choice of some proper Person to be your Speaker; and that you present such Person whom you shall so choose here, To-morrow at Twelve o'Clock, for His Majesty's Royal Approbation."

Then the Commons withdrew.

The House was adjourned during Pleasure, to unrobe.

The House was resumed.

The Lord Chancellor, singly, in the first Place, at the Table, took the Oaths, and also took and subscribed the Oath of Abjuration, pursuant to the Statutes.

Then the Certificate of the Clerk of the Crown of the Return of the Names of the Sixteen Peers chosen to sit and vote in this House for that Part of Great Britain called Scotland, delivered to the House by the Deputy Clerk of the Crown on the 14th Day of September last, was, pursuant to a Direction in the Roll of Standing Orders, read.

D. of Cambridge takes the Oaths.

His Royal Highness Adolphus Frederick Duke of Cambridge took the Oaths, and also took and subscribed the Oath of Abjuration, pursuant to the Statutes.
