A local Vancouver high school was temporarily put in lockdown after police responded to a report of a man entering with a gun. Police say they received a report of a “man carrying a rifle entering Lord Byng Secondary this morning” after a teacher called 911 at 8:05am.

Officers immediately responded and quickly arrived on scene. They discovered that a staff member had brought in a vintage rifle for a school presentation.

“We immediately dispatched an emergency response to the school, and began searching for a suspect and to determine if anyone was injured,” says VPD Constable Jason Doucette. “Working closely with school staff, we were able to locate a staff member who had carried a vintage rifle into the school, for a presentation.”

The school was put in lockdown to allow police to conduct a search. Students had not yet arrived for classes with only teachers inside during the lockdown.

Police located the staff member who “confirmed they had a vintage rifle”.

“Based on the initial investigation, officers do not believe the staff member had any criminal intent.”

Vancouver Police shared a picture of the vintage firearm that was seized.

Police are now working with the Vancouver School Board to ensure this situation is avoided in the future.

“Today’s incident put our training into action,” says Doucette. “Resources were quickly in place and our team was able to resolve the issue.”
