Looney Tunes: Back in Action

Looney Tunes: Back in Action ★★★½

Joe Dante really went on put in the research and the work for this one, like damn! The sheer amount of references and nods, all done with a feeling of fun reverence instead of cynical "hey remember this?" type shit that WB has been doing lately - like how Bugs pulls out the exact number of Oscars that Looney Tunes shorts have gotten, or him saying the exact number of shorts he and Elmer Fudd were in together - and the non-Tunes references and cameos: Dick Miller popping up once again in a Dante movie, Roger Corman getting mad at a ruined take like the notorious cheapskate he is, Kevin McCarthy reprising Miles Bennell from the OG Invasion of the Body Snatchers (and being rendered in black and white, too!), fucking Ro-Man from Robot Monster, A DALEK, and there's Casey Kasem's Shaggy chastizing Matthew Lillard's take on him, which is especially hilarious in hindsight as Matthew would be officially endorsed by Casey to take over the role.

Brendan Fraser in his physical prime, Timothy Dalton basically being Bond again via technicality, GOLDBERG (whom I could recognize just by the back of his head), the ACME VPs including Ron Perlman and Robert Picardo (fitting that we see the latter after hearing the Star Trek door-whooshing sounds) and a tremendous amount of visual humor make this just a wonderful time overall.
Also, I see you sneaking in Jerry Goldsmith's Gremlins score Joe, you cheeky lad - though in fairness, this was the legend's final score before colon cancer took him from us...
