The Truth Behind David Dobrik's Relationship With Ex Liza Koshy

When a Hollywood couple breaks up, there's a few ways they announce the news to the world. Some employ the Khloé Kardashian method of hinting at a split with cryptic Instagram posts. Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth took a professional route, releasing a statement via a publicist. There's also the tried-and-true joint Instagram post, like Channing Tatum and Jenna Dewan shared, leaving no room for speculation. If you're a YouTuber, though, maybe you'd make an emotional, six-minute video. At least that's how David Dobrik and Liza Koshy announced their split in 2018.

Considering they're both famous from YouTube, what better way to announce the end of their relationship than the same way they revealed they were dating in the first place? It was in a 2016 video that the pair revealed they were together, so let's take a trip down their relationship memory lane — including that heartbreaking split.

David Dobrik called his relationship with Liza Koshy his "proudest accomplishment"

During their relationship, Liza Koshy and David Dobrik couldn't have seemed happier. They filmed a bunch of videos together and gushed over one another on social media. In a heartfelt Instagram in November 2017, Dobrik reflected on their two years together, which he deemed his "biggest and proudest accomplishment." "Thank you for giving me something to show off and brag about and overall just make me look a lot cooler than I actually am," he wrote. The 23-year-old added, "I am in love with all that you do and all that you create. Thanks for being my partner and best friend."

On their one-year anniversary in 2016, Koshy wrote on IG, "it's hard for me to even describe how happy this kid makes me. i've never grown so close and so comfortable with someone, and it wasn't hard since you're so comfy to snuggle with. and so fun to laugh with. and so proud to be with. and so easy to love." And that's just two of the many posts they shared about one another while they dated.

Liza Koshy and David Dobrik broke the breakup news on YouTube

In June 2018, the couple shared a YouTube video simply titled "we broke up." To date, it's gotten more than 59 million views. The clip was actually posted six months after they split, but as David Dobrik wrote in the video description, "Sorry we didn't let you know sooner... we wanted to be comfortable talking about it :)"

In the tear-filled video, Liza Koshy announced, "David and I aren't together anymore." However, throughout the video, they made sure to emphasize that they're still best friends. "The only thing that's different is we're not boyfriend and girlfriend anymore," Dobrik said. As it turns out, Koshy was the one who dumped Dobrik. Focusing on a message of self-love, she explained, "This is gonna sound so lame, but I really wanna spread love, but I have to have it first. It's like saying you're going to spread mayonnaise when you only have mustard."

Another reason for the split? They'd grown apart. "We already felt like we were living separate lives, which sucked, but neither of us were coming to terms with it," Koshy said. While they waited six months to tell fans, they didn't tell their friends for three months, so the internet shouldn't feel too bad about being left in the dark a little bit.

Liza Koshy and David Dobrik are still "really close friends"

Liza Koshy admitted to Cosmopolitan in October 2019 that she wouldn't make the same type of incredibly personal video today, but also added, "I have no regrets, period." Ultimately, she said, "We needed to get our truth off our chests." While she clarified they didn't necessarily "owe" fans an explanation, she thought they deserved to know. Koshy said, "As we were filming the video, it kind of went to an emotional place and I decided to be like, 'Hey, you know what, this is my truth too. I'm going through a tough time, and I'm going to put it online.'"

And it sounds like their friendship really has continued, just like they promised in the video. In May 2019, David Dobrik told J-14, "We're like really, really close friends. Best friends, I guess. That's the best way to put it." He added, "It hasn't gotten awkward yet, which is great. I feel like relationships with exes could get weird, but hasn't happened yet, so we're both truly happy."

Sometimes people really are better as friends. And when it comes to Koshy and Dobrik's bond, that sounds like the best route for them — no matter how much it bummed out fans to see them part ways romantically.
