Much better than the original Resonance release. I have both and this one sounds like a completely different recording.- Edited one year agoGot a copy for cheap. Love Bill Evans. This recording has absolutely no low end. Even boosting the low end with a four channel equalizer can’t save it like it usually does. Does a disservice to Gomez on bass. Likely just the nature of the recording. But… it’s a trio and 1/3 of the players are essentially left out! The digital version sounds just slightly better.
- I have no problem with the sound quality of this recording, it sounds live. On my system the rhythm section sounds great and has depth. I think Evans playing is also exciting as he seems to be taking risks that he pulls off 9/10 times.
- Limited Edition, Numbered = what the maximum quantity pressing it really limited edition? Here 4000 copies numbered and limited edition, really?
- This is the only Bill Evans recording from The Village Gate ever released, offering listeners a table at the front of the stage for a stellar performance by one of jazz's greatest trios. The lineup that night consisted of three musicians in their prime: Evans, bassist Eddie Gomez, and drummer Marty Morell. Recorded by George Klabin with an analog tube console.
- Edited 4 years agoFor me the sound is a bit disapointing at this edition, flat bass and dull low dynamic sound at all, like recorded through a veil. Differs within the songs, and has some clicks and noise. Vinyl is clean and flat and the cut is very good.
Yes, it's a "bootleg" and you can't expect something like the Village Vanguard recording, but compared with the other Resonance recordings - especially the fantastic Hilversum concert - this one lacks from quality. Even the gatefold sleeve is thin and slightly warped.
But no doubt, Bill's music is first class quality here. For fans of Bill Evans - like me - it's nevertheless a must have in the collection... - Have heard all the Resonance live Evans releases and this one ranks toward top as far as sound quality. My pressing flawless as well.
- Nice pressing, but the recording is exceptionally flat. Almost no oomph or body behind the upright bass.
- Solid pressing, but sounds mediocre due to the nature of the recording. Jacket of my copy came warped which makes it look water damaged. Amazing setlist, not his best performance, but definitely worth having for any fan of his.
