Whitney Houston Live: Her Greatest Performances, is a collection of live recordings that are finally released for the first time as a CD or download. The recordings really remind me and the world of how someone extra-special had something to say that meant something, because it was from the soul of the heart. Whitney Houston had so many performances that really delivered from the heart, and showed the simplicity of a little girl from New Jersey, could deliver the world over with her beloved soul. The performances range well from her debut on The Merv Griffin Show in 1983, when she sung Home, to the Super Bowl in 1991 when she did The Star Spangled Banner, to when she did a Interview about her heartbreak with Oprah Winfrey in 2009, and delivering on I Didn't Know My Own Strength, giving Oprah Winfrey the highest-rated interview on her 25 years on The Oprah Winfrey Show. There are just so many songs that still hit from the heart. There are so many performances that really deliver all over again, at the core of the matter. The DVD also delivers as well with extra-riveting performances, like when Whitney performed When You Believe with Mariah Carey at the 1999 Oscars which won the Academy Award for best song from The Prince Of Egypt. While I do wish that could've been on the CD as well, just the sheer joy of Whitney's heart is delivered so well here.
It is honestly never possible to celebrate someones life, without mourning their death. That is said with John Lennon, Kurt Cobain, but it also somberly is said with Whitney Houston as well. I definitely do not think she had ever forgot how she had been targeted as The "Crack Is Whack" girl racially, spiritually and emotionally, when she was going through her trials, and tribulations. But if there is one honest thing Whitney Houston showed is that true beauty does come from the voice within. That is honestly something that needs to be said with today's singers than being trends and products. Whitney Houston showed more than any of the female singers of today that does come from the voice alone. Whitney Houston Live: Her Greatest Performances is a definite must buy for die hard Whitney fans, as well as anyone who had never heard a Whitney Houston song before.

The biggest ding is for the DVD. I understand that not everyone has an HDTV, but the picture quality of the menu is pretty poor, and so are the video transfers from her earlier/earliest performances. 1983 was a long time ago technology, but the video quality isn't significantly better than what's available on YouTube, so I guess I expected a little more magic retouching or improving the quality of the picture. Sound-wise, the fact that she sang "Home" into a talk show studio microphone explains the sound quality but.. still.
All of that said, these are some of my favorite performances of any artist in history - especially One Moment in Time, the Bodyguard medley from the AMA in 1994, and of course - I Believe in You and Me. Her performance of that was especially heartbreaking because - as you can see from the video - she had been beaten down pretty badly by drugs and just the general state of her life, and the fan reception she got was amazing. Unfortunately love from fans wasn't enough to save her.
RIP, Whitney.
"This Song is For You" in honor of the Great Whitney Houston. I will miss her beautiful sound that in my heart will live forever.
I Love You Whitney.

"This Song is For You"
In fond Memory of Whitney Houston
By Doris Washington
When I hear “I Will Always Love You”-
I hear a sweet lullaby you sing so beautiful.
When I hear “I Believe In You And Me”-
I hear you sing what the meaning of
True love is all about.
When I hear “ Greatest Love Of All”-
I hear your voice sing that every child
Is beautiful.
When I hear you sing the National Anthem -
I hear you sing it with pictures of America-
Its wonderful beauty-
Its heavenly skies-
From Maine to California.
When I hear “I Love The Lord”-
I hear you sing Praises To The Lord-
Testifying your love for Him forevermore.
When I hear “I Will Always Love You”-
I hear a sweet lullaby you sing so beautiful.
Dear Whitney-

Now, on to the selection. The good thing is that you get so many of Whitney's good performances in one collection, saving you the trouble of searching them out individually on YouTube (and I haven't tried searching all of them out, so I am not sure if all are available on YouTube, but I think all or most should be). Are they her best? I don't know, as I am not a die-hard Whitney fan, and I'll leave that to die-hard fans to comment. However, one thing I felt watching these performances was sadness, seeing her progression from the shy newbie singing on the Merv Griffin show, to her most glorious performances around 1985 - 1991, and then her gradual deterioration (mostly in her voice but also in her heart in the singing) thereafter. What a waste for such an amazing talent!
Overall, her greatest two performances on this CD/DVD are "One Moment in Time" and the 1991 "The Star Spangled Banner". No one has ever come close to the emotional impact her singing has on her audience in these two performances, and I doubt if anyone in the future can ever match that. But then, you can easily find both on YouTube. Still, given that you get a CD and a DVD for a reasonable price, and her singing is quite amazing most of the time, this is an OK deal, hence the 4 stars.
R.I.P. Tu restes la meilleure et tu restes unique !!!
