For an artist who only released four proper albums in a 15-year career, it's astounding to recall how many hits Whitney Houston was able to achieve. The two CDs on The Greatest Hits track Houston's rise from mid-'80s Top 40 balladeer to standard-setting diva. Disc 1, Cool Down, runs chronologically through Houston's down-tempo love songs, from "The Greatest Love of All" and "I Will Always Love You" to the cleverly conceived new duet with Deborah Cox, "Same Script, Different Cast." She's also showcased as the remixee of choice for DJs on the second disc, Throw Down, which serves as the antidote to the lovesick first disc. Calling in marquee mixmasters, Houston's old-shoe tunes get a new millennium polish. "My Love Is Your Love," reinterpreted by Jonathan Peters, captures the versatility of Houston's songs by making the downbeats danceable without going totally Euro-cheese. In contrast, Junior Vasquez's remix of 1985's "How Will I Know" pokes fun at the song's '80s fluffiness by layering in bells, lasers effects, and echoes on top of Whitney's enthusiastic vocals. --Heidi Sherman

After 15 years-plus of churning out hit after hit, it has arrived: the greatest hits collection by one of the premier female artists of the last two decades. Piled onto two CDs (or cassettes) are 36 tracks that feels like a stroll down memory lane with an old friend.
Whitney Houston's recrod-breaking debut album set a standard for success for black female artists- let alone, female artists. On this greatest hits collection Ð which is broken out into the "Cool Down" set containing her greatest ballads, and "Throw Down," which includes remixes of her uptempo numbers Ð four ballds from the debut kick off the affair. Hearing the opening notes of songs like "You Give Good Love," "Saving All My Love For You" and "Greatest Love of All" reminds one of the way ballads should be done. It's also a joy to hear the power duet "If You Say My Eyes Are Beautiful" (with Jermaine Jackson) for the first time on a Whitney album. While the ballads up through "I Will Always Love You" are the strongest, slightly dipping in greatness with nevertheless-pleasing tracks like "Exhale" and "I Believe in You and Me," "My Love is Your Love" brings things back to speed. The new 'Same Script, Different Cast, "wich pairs Houston with up-and-coming diva Deborah Cox, is a lovely affair, effectively sampling a classic Beethoven number. The Metro Mix of "Could I Have This Kiss Forver," a previously released duet with Enrique Iglesias, is passable, but kinda pales in comparison to the preceding track.
"Throw Down" gets a bit monotonous with the similar-sounding-at-times remixes, but they still serve their purpose well- showing Houston as an artist who is not content to just be represented by her ballads or original studio versions of her hits. Whereas someone like Mariah Carey unabashedly uses the remix as a means of greater sales impact for her singles, Houston clearly utilizes them as a means of extending and imnproving upon her existing art, as demonstrated by the killer Thunderpuss remix for "It's Not Right But it's Okay." The remix gives the song new dimensions and colors that the studio version lacked. And a song as trite as 1987's "Love Will Save the Day" even feels fresh with its makeover courtesy of Jellybean and David Morales.
While at times the remixes are not on par with the original versions (i.e., "I Learned From the Best" or "How Will I Know"), the results are by no means embarrassing or unlistenable, as are some outlandish remixes released by others. The George Michael collaboration on "If I Told You That," however, does nothing to add to the party, lacking a cohesive feel that works on the other duets. The Q-Tip-produced 'Fine," on the other hand, is a wonder, showing yet another funky turn by Houston that has bot been represented before, even at My Love is Your Love's funkiest.
"Whitney: The Greatest Hits" is a must-have for anyone interested in chronocling the advent of popular music over the last 20 years. Some may feel there's track-overload or that a few songs may be missing (such as her early duet with Teddy Pendegrass on the glorious "Hold Me"), but there's really nothing here to complain to the high heavens about. While at times you may feel like hitting the snooze button after one too many melodramatic ballads (one of the complains cited by some reviewers), or feel on the verge of collapse from exhaustion after possibly jamming the night away to the "Throw Down" set, this is a release that simply cannot be ignored.
On that note, the album's closing titles work wonders following the nonstop dance-a-thon. "One Moment in Time" ranks as one of Houston's most lovely, emotional anthems, and it's fitting that her 1991 rendiiton of "The Star Spangled Banner," which she essentially sings the sh** out of, closes the collection. Wailing through this timeless standard as if it's being sung for the first time, the track ends with applause befitting such an impressive body of work. Take that well-deserved bow, Ms. Houston, you're still one of the greatest of them all. Ð B+
