I found it dealt with the tension between mother and daughter a little too neatly, but otherwise it made me feel good about life, in its very American way.

Wouldn't have bothered with this if I knew it was another entry in a long list of "visiting the parents" indie films, but the perspective in this is skewed enough to make it interesting. Maybe I just liked the music a lot.

A cute little tale about self-definition. The depth of the main character is handled well, which is a relief as it is the crux of the plot. Timelin does a great job showcasing an uptight character facing a crossroads in her life. Setting the story around the 2008 election, connecting to the theme of change, fell flat in my eyes. Fortunately this is redeemed by the mother who injects some much needed fun. The choice for the brother's disfigurement is a distracting as it's reminiscent of Deadpool.

I'm fond of the central story of a young woman making peace with her past as she prepares to establish her future. The whole thing does strike me at times as a little too quirky for its own good, and the political "subtext" is too on the nose, but all in all a well observed portrayal of grace in the midst of dysfunction.

Builds a comfortable atmosphere, the characters are strong, and it seems to be going somewhere - until the climax takes a swerve for the absurd, and it isn't able to pull it off. The political subtext is annoying and distracting as well. Addison Timlin gives a great performance, and much of what the film succeeds at is because of her.

For such an odd little story, most of this film feels very genuine. An honest coming-of-age about a twenty something seem to be a rare breed recently, in spite of the endless attempts. The 90 minute runtime is genius, as a longer film would have had to flesh out more of the undercurrent of disfunction. This task would have likely made things fall apart.

"Voted as Best Film of 2016 by Richard Brody, film critic at the New Yorker". Good job prospects for the aspiring critics out there in the near future! Not as bad as my rating's tier suggests, though. First part was charming.

Zach Clark has directed a sad comedy about a dysfunctional family for what he calls "the little goth girl in all of us." Thanks, we needed it. In Little Sister, a skillful blend of humor and heartbreak (minus sappy sentiment), Clark takes us to places and head spaces we don't see coming.

Sincere performances and a believable cast of characters elevate a simple story into a touching picture. Timlin's Colleen's attempt at balancing her newfound faith with her old lifestyle for the sake of reconnecting with her family grounds the story in both a sentimental and practical fashion.

Little Sister is a film that doesn't seem like it's going to be much of anything on paper but, thanks to a few key decisions, it turns into something quite great. From its deep characters, to its political backdrop, it always gives you something about which you can think or care. It's got great acting, engaging ideas, and is proof that a movie can change some of the pieces of a pretty generic template to become much more.
