What a Fucking INSANE film.
Never saw it and wanted to watch before the Video Archives podcast episode and so glad I did.
A truly strange film.
Sleazy and nasty at it’s core, if that’s your thing.
And while it tries too hard to be like 4 different films (expose on the fashion world, rape revenge film, courtroom drama, message movie..) it’s never not dull at least!
I always thought Chris Sarandon was creepy in degrees in other films but this is maybe the CREEPIEST.
The last 10 minutes is certifiably CRAZY.
Holy shit.
For a 70’s rape and revenge thriller this one works more as a gritty drama. The film plays fairly realistic most of the time and the assault sequence itself is very brutal and executed very effectively. The cast is a bit of a mixed bag. Chris Sarandon is very good in his sinister and devilishly charming part of the serial rapist. Other highlights are the wonderful and fierce Anne Bancroft and the very young Mariel Hemingway in her screen debut. Her sister Margaux on the other is not the strongest actress in my opinion.
From what I hear her performance did not go over well with critics and most of the audience at the time. I don’t want to be…
Super stylish and surprisingly graphic, Lipstick is a forgotten 70s thriller that deserves more attention. Margaux Hemingway's face is just a marvel to look at, she does a fabulous job of carrying the movie, her very first role as an actress. Mariel Hemingway is fantastic too, a great performance by a promising young child actor. Anne Bancroft, enough said!! The whole movie is full of great female performances.
What starts out as a glamorous and sexy look at a fashion model’s life slowly turns into a disturbing and at times tough to watch thriller that only the 70s was able to produce, a movie like this wouldn’t get made today, no way. I watched Eyes of Laura Mars recently and felt like some more 70s high fashion thriller goodness and this hit the spot very well.
Holy shit, this is really something. I had no idea what this was about, just that it was some kind of thriller. Next thing I knew I was watching a hugely disturbing rape scene.
Gaspar Noe said that a rape scene in a film must be disgusting to be of any use at all. Well, he certainly demonstrated that in no uncertain terms in Irreversible. This is a difficult subject to speak about with unequivocal conviction, but I do tend to agree that, if you're going to portray rape, shouldn't it be truly horrifying? Not gonna lie, this film brought Irreversible to mind. It's nowhere near as upsetting as that film, but then again, nothing is as upsetting as Irreversible,…
I had heard about this a couple of years ago in the excellent Cinema Sewer fanzine but totally forgot about it. It had been popping into my mind a fair bit recently though, a few people on Letterboxd logging it, so I tracked it down. Of course it all became clear when I went to download the next episode of the Video Archives podcast, as this was one of their picks. I must've seen it listed and forgot about it. I tell you what though, I'm glad I didn't listen to the episode before I saw this, as this is one film that definitely benefits from going in cold.
A hard one to class, this feels like an ahead of…
"...every human being has the right of simple consent. Even women."
PREACH IT
I was honestly hesitant to watch this film because of my own personal triggers, but I'm glad I did. The honest and raw depiction of being a victim of rape and how society, a jury, a defense, and everyone looks at you.
People wonder why victims of sexual assault don't always report - because when they do either the rapist wins the legal battle, or they are slut shamed. Very rarely does the attacker get what they deserve.
The one in this film did.

After watching Mandingo last year, I instantly became a fan of Perry King, adding this film to my watchlist at that time. Since then, a believe this film was featured on Quentin Tarantino’s podcast. I’ve been searching for this film for a while (I guess I didn’t search very hard as it has a Blu Ray release from Shout Factory), and it showed up on Hoopla this week.
Margaux Hemingway plays a model, Chris, who is at the top of the print ad industry, shooting sexy ads for lipstick (I think the name of the brand may even be called Lipstick). She takes care of her sister Kathy (played by her real life sister…
LIPSTICK. IT ISN’T ALWAYS AN INVITATION TO A KISS.
“He wanted to kill me...with his cock!”
47 years later and it is still current.
justice is only effective when it is taken by the hands, but when it is taken, they will punish you for the crime that the abuser should have been held responsible for.
it is incredible how they always find a way to blame women for the sick acts of each man, like? this NEEDS to change.. someday. i hope.
Interessanterweise…
'Lipstick' seems pretty close of what reality looks like, when it comes to a tragedy and justice. Blaming the victim for being provocative and making the rapist look like the good guy.
This film starts with a very long rape scene that would make you throw up, if this were based on true events. It's not graphic but you can imagine it.
Also very interesting and cute at the same time seeing the sisters Margaux Hemingway and Mariel Hemingway (who played Dorothy Stratton in Star 80, something similar with a super model). Sadly reading the bio of Margaux, things didn't go so well for her and ended in suicide a few of years after this movie was released.
That's awful because I really loved her role here.
Anyway the movie has a super weird soundtrack that I even liked and an very enjoyable twist.
an avant garde electronic music composer turns out to be a serial rapist… and people dare say this is unrealistic
of what i’ve seen, probably the genre’s best swing at the legal procedural angle. the marcia clark ass prosecutor really brought it home
