About the author
The daughter of a town marshal, Linda Lael Miller is a #1 New York Times and USA TODAY bestselling author of more than 100 historical and contemporary novels, most of which reflect her love of the West. Raised in Northport, Washington, Linda pursued her wanderlust, living in London and Arizona and traveling the world before returning to the state of her birth to settle down on a spacious property outside Spokane.
Linda traces the birth of her writing career to the day when a Northport teacher told her that the stories she was writing were good, that she just might have a future in writing. Later, when she decided to write novels, she endured her share of rejection before she sold Fletcher’s Woman in 1983 to Pocket Books. Since then, Linda has successfully published historicals, contemporaries, paranormals, mysteries and thrillers before coming home, in a literal sense, and concentrating on novels with a Western flavor. For her devotion to her craft, the Romance Writers of America awarded her their prestigious Nora Roberts Lifetime Achievement Award in 2007.
Long a passionate Civil War buff, Linda has studied the era avidly for almost thirty years. She has read literally hundreds of books on the subject, explored numerous battlegrounds and made many visits to her favorite, Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, where she has witnessed re-enactments of the legendary clash between North and South. Linda explores that turbulent time in The Yankee Widow, a May 7, 2019 MIRA Books hardcover, also available in digital and audiobook formats.
Dedicated to helping others, “The First Lady of the West” personally financed fifteen years of her Linda Lael Miller Scholarships for Women, which she awarded to women 25 years and older who were seeking to improve their lot in life through education. She anticipates that her next charitable endeavors will benefit four-legged critters.

IN ALL SEASONS takes place in medieval times where two young hearts were torn apart by betrayal. A few years later the young couple meet again, one deathly ill and the other devoted to the church. By working through their differences, they find their love never truly died.
THE SCENT OF SNOW is a touching story about a young lady devoted to her two younger sisters. Her devotion includes taking over the claim of a homestead and making a home out of very little. Later, the real owner comes to claim his home. Having suffered a lenghtly illness, he was delayed in claiming the plot of land he'd worked so hard to attain. He arrives in town to find that he's married...and that his "wife" is a woman from his past...
STORE BOUGHT WOMAN takes place on a farm...a mail order bride is abandoned by the ne'er-do-well brother of a steady man. The bride, coming from the East, is appalled at being abandoned but her good nature comes through and she and the brother rub along well, so well in fact...
I'm not a fan of science-fiction/time travel, but THAT OTHER KATHERINE was a good read. Both Katherines (one good and one bad) are in life threatening situations. One exists in modern day, the other in colonial times - they switch places through both making a wish to "die" at the same time. Only one survives... and she must win the trust and love of a special man.
This book has 4 short stories about love. I absolutely love to curl up on a cold day with a hot cup of tea and re-read these stories.
When I started reading Together, an anthology of five novellas by Linda Lael Miller, I had an “ut-oh” moment because the first was a historical and I tend to stay away from most historicals. However, the writing was compelling, so I stuck with it.
Reading romance novellas requires that the reader suspends some of the expectations that they bring to novel reading. Obviously characters can’t be as developed as they are in novels and there is more of a chance of insta-love. Of the five novellas, four were historicals, although one involves time travel (or something like it), and I found that I didn’t really care about the insta-love. In most cases, the two already people knew each other, which kind of quells ragings about insta-love.
What I loved was Miller’s use of swoon. For some reason a lot of romance writers are forgetting the build-up in order to get to the main event, which is kind of sad because in real relationships all of the build-up is very swoon-worthy, the smoldering looks, the flirtation, the kisses…. Anyway, before I go any further into a tangent, Miller’s stories have swoon. If you’re a fan of that, you may love these stories.
I enjoyed all of the novellas with the exception of the last one. Please note, the blurb above is wrong for the last novella in this anthology. It’s called “Switched.” While it does incorporate a cat named Lazarus, very cool cat by the way, it isn’t about sparring families but about a pair of twins who switch lives. “Switched” falls into more of the romantic suspense line and I feel it would have been better as a full-length novel. Unlike the others, it is not historical and the “insta-love” to me felt really unbelievable. As I said, it would have benefited from a longer treatment.
My favorites of the novellas were “That Other Katherine,” which had a time travelish kind of theme and “The Scent of Snow,” about a woman who pretends to be a man’s wife and taking over his plot of land because she thinks he was killed.
These novellas are great to slip in when you have a short amount of time and just want a snack kind of read.
I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
