The latest client of the agency is a psychiatrist and author of a new book. When the executive goes over to discuss the ad campaign, the psychiatrist turns out to be a woman. The cringe-worthy quote on the poster here 'The Love Affair of a Laugh Time' is about as good as the jokes get in this 40's rom-com. That's not much of an exaggeration really. I chuckled once or twice and found myself checking the runtime clock often. Unfortunately for me the next few titles on this disk aren't any more promising than this one was. I guess that's what I get for seeking out every bad 50-pack of movies in existence.

Hedy playing a doctor, which was probably a role more closely aligned with her intellect than anything else she was ever afforded. The story was silly but she was unquestionably charming. Unfortunately, someone thought it a better idea to showcase Robert Cummings.

Hedy Lamarr is a psychologist (in life, of course, she was a scientist as well as a stunning starlet), and Robert Cummings, ad executive, is confused. This 40s comedy doesn't quite work, as Hedy wasn't naturally suited for the genre, but the leads have a pleasing chemistry.
With four writers, the screenplay does its best to sizzle but similar ground was covered (with better results) in the early scenes of Mr Blandings Builds His Dream House. Cummings, though, does well in light comic turns so he does add a touch of amusement to the first third of Let's Live A Little.

Nothing major, but charming in it's own way. More for Robert Cummings than Hedy Lamarr, but both make it a fun little affair.
As predicted, this was not one of her best films. It’s a very silly romantic comedy, with Lamarr in the straight role as this publicity photo indicates. The “male” name thing happens again too, even if Jo is more ambiguous than Theodore and Johnny.
The main thing I learned from my Hedy Lamarr Mini-Season is this: she may have only made 25 movies in her 19 years in Hollywood, but she played a wide range of parts in that time and proved she was as good a comedic actress as she was a dramatic one. Also, my GOD, the sex appeal.
In nine of the ten films I watched, she played: a 19th century femme fatale, a refugee, a comedy Communist, an illegal immigrant-slash-mistress, a sex-mad jungle native, a spy, a princess, a successful art editor and a psychiatrist. That’s range, that is.
Why’d they have to make the leading man so unlikeable. Hedy, darling, you can do so much better…
"Let's Live a Little" from 1948 stars Robert Cummings, Hedy Lamarr, Anna Stenn, and Robert Shayne. Baby boomers will recognize Shayne by voice alone as Inspector Henderson on TV's Superman from the '50s. This is the largest role I've seen him do.
Robert Cummings plays Duke Crawford, an advertising executive with too much work, too much pressure, and an ex-fiancee client Michelle Bennett (Anna Stenn) who is driving him insane. His boss expects her to sign a $100,000 renewal contract so they can advertise her beauty products, but she's leading them on, making demand after demand.
His boss suggests that he stop working on the Bennett campaign and turn to something else - getting press for a new book by…
The second half of that was awfully silly and dreadful. It felt like Hedy was only allowed to do a lot of dreamy staring into space so we could dreamily stare at her perfect face. Goddamnit, let the woman act. She actually can, y'know, watch her in The Strange Woman. Though perhaps light comedy isn't her thing, or perhaps she just needed stronger direction. I don't know but it very much annoyed me to see her be silly and unconvincing instead of wonderful onscreen. I like her so much.

The first half though was enormous fun. Possibly my fave Bob Cummings role so far, he was so delightfully unhinged, and that dialogue was really quite funny with the non-sequiturs and the roundabout repetitions. I didn't like the tache much but that became a non-issue.
