A report from August 2018, when Antonio Pappano was recording the composer's three symphonies

While we take a pause for Christmas, we're bringing you four podcasts which Gramophone's Martin Cullingford and James Jolly have chosen as particularly enjoyable and memorable conversations. This week it's once again the turn of James to choose...

This archive episode comes from August 2018 when James went to Rome to report on a celebration of the music of a composer currently very much in the news with the release of the Steven Spielberg’s film of West Side Story, Leonard Bernstein, whose centenary was being marked that year. He talked to Sir Antonio Pappano about recording Bernstein's three symphonies - Jeremiah (No 1), The Age of Anxiety (No 2) and Kaddish (No 3) – with his Orchestra of the Accademia di Santa Cecilia in Rome, as well as to soloists Beatrice Rana and Marie-Nicole Lemieux, and Bernstein's Personal Assistant Craig Urquhart. (And if you're inspired by what you've heard on the podcast, you can listen to the album below, via Apple Music).
