Logan was intended to be the final chapter in the Wolverine film trilogy and the final time Hugh Jackman would play the popular X-Men character that began with the 2000 live-action movie. However, nearly a decade after Jackman’s swan song for the Marvel hero, the Australian actor is returning to his iconic role in Deadpool & Wolverine.

In an interview with Empire, Jackman opened up about playing Wolverine again for the new Deadpool movie and how it felt to finally wear the character’s yellow suit. "We almost did it in The Wolverine,” Jackman said. “But from the moment I put it on here, I was like, ‘How did we never do this?’ It looked so right, it felt so right. I was like, ‘That’s him.’ There are different sides of Wolverine we haven’t seen before in the movies. It was exciting for me.”

With Jackman giving nearly 20 years of his life to the world of X-Men – which had its fair share of highs and lows under the ownership of 20th Century Fox – the majority of comic book fans understood and respected the actor’s decision to leave the role behind after the release of Logan. It certainly helped that Logan was considered by fans and critics alike to be an excellent emotional sendoff for the mutant anti-hero created by Len Wein and John Romita Sr. A surprising reception from moviegoers, considering the Wolverine film trilogy got off to a rocky start with the 2009 release of X-Men Origins: Wolverine.

Hugh Jackman Returns as Wolverine

However, Jackman believes Deadpool & Wolverine – the first R-rated Marvel movie under Disney – offers another angle on Wolverine through his unlikely alliance with the Merc with the Mouth. He said, “It’s great for Deadpool to have someone who will punch him in the face.” Not much has been revealed about the film’s story, besides the fact that the Time Variance Authority have forced Deadpool to go on a time-traveling mission with Wolverine that will “change the history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.” The formerly titled Deadpool 3 will feature cameos from Fox’s X-Men movies and possibly Taylor Swift.

Brian Cox addressed rumors regarding his involvement in Deadpool & Wolverine.

As Jackman previously mentioned, he almost wore the yellow superhero costume in The Wolverine movie released in 2013. However, the introduction of the costume became nothing more than an alternative ending for the film. James Mangold, who directed The Wolverine, Logan and Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, explained why he’s personally against the idea of Logan suiting up for action.

"I always feel a certain contingent of fans who are yearning for it," Mangold said. "But the biggest block I’ve had – I’m willing to take the heat for it – is that, I can never get past, being a writer for these movies as well, that Logan is the least narcissistic of all the superheroes, any kind I can think of – Marvel, DC or anywhere else. What I mean by that is, who puts a special branded outfit on when they do good deeds? And why?"

He continued, "The only reason you do it is so you can have some sort of trademarked claim and get credit for what you did. Nothing seems less Wolverine-like than the desire to put on a trademarked outfit, particularly canary yellow, and kind of prance about doing good deeds and have people go, 'Oh my God! It’s The Wolverine!' At least the Wolverine, as I see him, that’s a real struggle for me and always has been. I somehow feel that if somehow we ever put Hugh [Jackman] into one of those outfits, people would not be happy. Essentially, it’s something that lives on the page and I’m not sure could live anywhere else."
