This time took the ferry from Central to Sok Kwu Wan and then hiked in the other direction. , equally delightful. Although it was Xmas vacation period and sunny, the trail was surprisingly empty. In Yung Shue Wan, which is full of expats, you can have a nice lunch or a drink in one of the numerous bars. You can buy XO sauce 'made in Lamma' and check out the delightful Lamma Vinyl record store before taking the ferry back to Central....Visited December 2023Traveled soloWritten January 8, 2024
- BradHong Kong, China160,162 contributionsConvenient day trip from HK Island with good hiking, beaches and environsLamma is one of our best small islands for those looking for convenient day trips near HK Island. You can reach Lamma by way of ferry from Central Ferry Pier 4 and the Aberdeen Promenade ferry pier. We have enjoyed a couple of relaxing hiking days on Lamma during this past hiking season. There are several different ways to visit and experience the island. We enjoy starting at Sok Kwu Wan or Mo Tat Wan for a bit of countryside hiking and then ending at Yung Shui Wan where there are more restaurant, bar and coffee shops options to enjoy before heading back to HK Island. You will find two family-style hiking trails at Lamma including a loop trail starting at Sok Kwu Wan that covers the southeast part of the island, taking in several nearly abandoned small villages. This route is more of a HK country park experience with lots of time in nature, quite beach access and manageable peaks with boulder fields and good viewpoints. It is around 6km in total distance. The second trail simply linking the two main villages of Yung Shui Wan (northwest) and Sok Kwu Wan (southeast). There are some mild elevation gains but this is mostly flat and straight-forward, an easier, family-friendly route with quite a few shops, eateries and bars at Yung Shui Wan, seafood restaurants at Sok Kwu Wan and access to Lamma's very best swimming beaches. Both trails are paved throughout, trails are in very good condition as well. It is around 5km in distance. Note: You can reference ferry schedules by way of the HKKF website (Central to Yung Shue Wan and Sok Kwu Wan) and Chuen Kee Ferry website (Aberdeen to Yung Shue Wan and Mo Tat Wan + Sok Kwu Wan). Services are more regular to/from Central.Visited February 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten April 2, 2024
- Chris B98 contributionsGreat Day OutMade the ferry trip to walk around the fabulous island with excellent views of HK Island. Restaurants are a little pricey but the quality of stunning. The beaches are fine but views are marred by the power station. Enjoyed seeing the water homes where families live in the harbour. Can get rather hot so be warned!Visited April 2024Traveled soloWritten April 5, 2024

Best part of our day trip was on the boat.Forget the island apart from some of the walks. Our son lives in Hong Kong so suggested going to the island as he hadn't been before..You get off the boat and wonder through a village ,all the time you are avoiding these small three wheeled bikes that charge around with food and other provisions. When you get through all these bike things it's more peaceful.Houses are in tatters mainly and others have fallen down and been left.We had a coffee and cake in one cafe but didn't want to eat a main meal in an outside restaurants with old rusty tin roofs and equally rusty tables.Never want to go again

Today’s island discovery bring you to the island nearest to Hong Kong main island. Although its a tourist have go island, Lamma island managed the retains the original island style which is not so commercialized. However seafood, international restaurants, bars and cafe are easily available. A walk around the whole island would takes half a day. Check ferries fares and schedule in the attached photos for Ferries to Lamma island from Central Pier no. 4

During our stay I fell in love with this island! The lifestyle here looks very different from the city’s hustle and bustle: relaxed, laid back, easy going. And it’s a very beautiful island with lots of hiking trails with amazing views, nice beaches, delicious food and friendly locals. No cars, just VVs (village vehicles) rustling about and carrying goods. We took a trail from Yung Shue Wan to Sok Kwu Wan fishing village on the other side climbing up for rewarding views and returning along the family path. In Sok Kwu Wan had a delicious lunch. The ferry service is very convenient, only 25 minutes to Central, very enjoyable. There are many expats living on this island, you can hear different languages spoken while wandering about. And the food options you get here range widely from very local Chinese, Indian, Malay, Mexican etc to having quite traditional English or American breakfast at Banyan cafe.

This is a small, relaxed and easygoing island, just a short hop by ferry away from all the HK madness. The island itself isn't that sensational but you'll appreciate the slow pace of life here. Quite a contrast with HK itself.
There are 2 small towns on the island and they're connected through a nice walking trail of 1-1,5 hours. Obviously both towns get their incomes from day trip tourists from HK, but it never gets cheesy. Nature is nice here and the views underway are awesome.
If you're visiting HK and have time to experience something different (yet still nearby), then this could be an option.

Easy to get across from Hong Kong island. Different hiking trials catering to varied levels of fitness. Yummy food outlets in
both piers. Today we had a very good lunch after our hike in Tong Kee Tea place, patronised largely by locals.

Head towards central pier 4. Will cost you just over 50HKD on a Sunday. You can use your octopus card which you can top up on the other side if it’s low on credit. There are 2 ports on Lamma island. We went from central to Sok Kwu Wan and trekked to Yung Shue Wan. Trek takes about an hour with some nice scenery as it’s mainly a coastal walk and some good views into picnic pay. Good food places too and we went to green cottage which was ok for veggie and vegan food. Which I’ve also reviewed for you all.

This island may seem not picturesque from afar because of the big chimneys. But once you get to the Yung Shu Wan ferry pier, keep hiking to the beach, one can feel the vivid island atmosphere and forget the power station easily.
The pier itself is different from Lantau and Cheung Chau, with a hundred meters walk with bicycles hanging along both sides. Then the restaurants scattered among the holiday houses in the main street. Though I cannot see any traditional fishing village left. The island is definitely a nice variant of pace and style than the city.

There're some offshore islands good for day trip and I picked Lamma Island for my nephew last Sunday. We took ferry from Central pier and the ride was very cozy with excellent air con (very important these days) and less than 30 mins.
Our route was from Yung Shue Wan (some western restaurants) to Sok Kwu Wan (some Chinese seafood restaurants) via the Hung Shing Yeh Beach.
The path was flat with a bit uphill, we walked awhile, ate awhile (eg the famous Ah Po Tofu) and took a rest in the kiosks on the way. We had lunch in the Concerto Inn which is next to the Hung Shing Yeh beach.
It's a sunny hot day. Felt so good to sweat 💦 We spent nearly 7 hours in the island. This place is less crowded than Cheung Chau, another popular island.

What about medical help, if you’l get a snake bite on lamma island?
Hi, do you know what's the name and where's the accommodation with cheaper price options? Since I'm maybe hanging around this island for 2D1N or 3D2N, I'm just looking for any lodging for putting off my backpack and sleep only. Have any recommendations? Thanks in advance...
What’s the best way to get there from Central? Any recommendations for foods and snacks?

Go to Pier 4 or 6 (forget which one ) , "they're in front of IFC (MTR Hong Kong station or Central station", take Hong Kong and Kowloon Ferry (public ferry)
Lamma island have two piers "Yung Shue Wan" and "Sok Kwu Wan", depend on which one you want, actually, quite similar, both have sea food, but quite expansive, some people like go to "Yung Shue Wan" first then walk "easy" to "Sok Kwu Wan", around 1 to 2 hours, beware the path have no cover
Remember a restaurant provide free ferry from Central to there, but sorry, I forgot which

Will there be a lot of people visiting Hung Sing Yeh beach on a long Saturday weekend? And how many BBQ grills are there near Hung Shing Ye BBQ Site??

Hi, I cannot tell you for certain - this is a very popular place - I think your only hope for a grill is to get there super early. Hope you have a great day.

Can I please get some Lamma Island (near Hong Kong) restaurant recommendations for a lunch early April, on a Friday - early-ish to get the ferry back to HK Island for a 3 pm function before the 7s Rugby starts? Don't want to hike miles (group of 8 friends, in early 60s)?

If you take the slow ferry across (only about 20 minutes longer), you will arrive at the town of Sok Kwu Won (I think) with more restaurants. Many are under the same management. Just look in the aquaria until you see the selection of food that you like, check the prices, grab a waterside table and enjoy. Also, Yung Shue has seafood restaurants, there are just more in Sok Kwu Wan.

Yes in 2012, I went inside, but need a torch to see anything.
I went to have an other look at the cave last September 2017,
but it had been blocked off with big boulders.

Couple of questions:
1. What's the best way to get to Lamma Island from Kowloon?
2. What hotel do you recommend for Lamma for one night?
Thanks

The only way to Lamma Island is by ferry at Central Pier. To be exact - "Take ferry from Central Pier 4 to Sok Kwu Wan", should take around 30-40 minutes.
From Kowloon to Central Pier you have two options
(1) By MTR - Hop on MTR then head to "Central Station" then walk inside station to "Hong Kong Station" and inside HK station follow signage or ask a staff to guide you to Central Pier. It's about 5-8 mins walk.
(2) By Star ferry - jump on Star ferry at Tsimshatsui side to Central (20 mins ride), off ferry then you are already at the Central Pier (where the big ferris wheel located), then 3 mins walk to Central Pier 4.
Regarding hotel, I believe there is no hotel accommodation on the island as HK is too small which talking about 30 mins - 1 hour travelling distance. If you are a camper you may consider having a wild night there.
Enjoy your stay in HK

We were only on a day trip and not seeking accommodation but did see some signs for rentals and hotel signs. Depends on what time of year you travel, you may be able to just turn up and book somewhere....highly recommend Lamma Island it is beautiful.
