Lady Barbara Fitzroy was the sixth and youngest child of Barbara Palmer, 1st Duchess of Cleveland, and King Charles II of England, although her paternity has been disputed. She became a Benedictine nun in the English Priory of Saint Nicholas, at Pontoise in France, taking the name Sister Benedicta, where she later became prioress in 1721.

Her funerary plaque is now on dispaly at the Cathédrale Saint-Maclou de Pontoise.
