Proof That Hollywood Can Still Make Excellent Film Noir
This disk is a great example of what should be the standard for the quality of Blue Ray at its best. The script presents us with a taut and well crafted tale which truly evokes what Los Angeles looked like in post-war era. If there is one glaring omission it is the failure to depict how many cigarette smokers there were in this era when smokers could light up right at their desk.In the film the part called Bloody Christmas is based on the historic events of 12/25/1951 at an LAPD sub-station when: "The attacks, which left five Hispanic and two white young men with broken bones and ruptured organs, were properly investigated only after lobbying from the Mexican American community. The internal inquiry by Los Angeles Chief of Police William H. Parker resulted in eight police officers being indicted for the assaults, 54 being transferred, and 39 suspended." Source: WikipediaOne mistake of continuity takes place when Detective Bud White (Russel Crowe) is leaving the Victory Motel during a heavy rain storm which turns the dirt parking lot into mud; however, when his car drives off there is a dust cloud formed by the cars wheels spinning on what is supposed to be mud. Or perhaps the mud in the Film Noir era is of a different quality than the mud I've seen. The film uses several historic bars from this era such as the Rumpus Room and the Frolic Room (the later was refurbished for this film) and is a bar that was one of the hot places for the Hollywood elite to mix. On one occasion "The Duke" passed out in the bar so he was left there to sleep it off; he slept through the night and when he woke up the following morning (since he was locked in) made breakfast while waiting for the bar to be opened. The film was nominated for some 35 awards ranging from Oscars to Golden Globe to BAFTA and won in 7 categories such as Kim Basinger getting an Oscar for best supporting actress. This is a must see for fans of Film Noir and is a should watch for all who love to watch gritty detective stories. At first there were some concerns that three of the most important protagonists were relative unknowns (Russel Crowe, Kevin Spacey and Guy Pearce) although this is the movie that made these actors — with a cost of some $25 Millions to make the film with a return on investment of some $120 million. Finally when we see Lynn Bracken as Veronica Lake with a client watching a Veronica Lake the film they are watching This Gun For Hire with Veronica Lake and Alan Ladd. (This film is also excellent Film Noir.)At this time (12/29/20) there are plans being made to produce a sequel to the movie although I'm not all sure this should be attempted since it's not easy to catch lightning in a bottle two times in a row.
