Streaming originals are usually not great.
Disney+ originals are some of the worst.
It also looks very corny.
However, Giannis is the GOAT.
Verdict: this is a masterpiece.

This was actually good! About as good as I could have imagined. Didn’t reinvent the wheel for underdog sports movies, but I was heavily invested the whole time. This is mostly because I adore Giannis and his families’ story but a large part of this films appeal is it’s craftsmanship. I was pleasantly surprised by some of these shots, subtle callbacks in the writing and the performances!

There's really no chance at all I wouldn't give this 5 stars. Followed Giannis's career since the moment the Bucks drafted him, read his book and was doing the Leo Point every 5 minutes when I recognized an anecdote. Easily my favorite athlete of all time.
There's plenty of corny Disney claptrap, like repeating over and over that their last name means "the king from across the sea" (get wrecked LeBron) or how literally the first time Giannis dribbles a basketball there's a slow zoom on his dad's face as he realizes the talent there. The basketball scenes are certainly above average for them but also definitely Disney basketball scenes.

This wasn’t bad, but it felt less like a sports movie and more like a mediocre drama. It did a decent job building the stakes, but for a movie called rise, it felt like it sprinted through his rise as a recruit. And there was something just kind of odd about the quality. Maybe it was the acting or the look of the film. Regardless, it was fairly enjoyable.

That was actually pretty good. More a movie about perseverance and sacrifice to preserve a family legacy than a sports movie and I think this is the reason why it worked so much for me.
After taking a quick look on Wikipedia about the three brothers and their NBA careers, I can declare that I am absolutely flabbergasted by how exceptional they are and what they have accomplished (so far). No doubt Disney wanted to make a feel-good story out of this. The family deserves all the praise they can get.

Rise has a continuous feeling of hope and that's what Giannis has taught us all. Never stop believing. His childhood wasn't easy and although the film doesn't capture it in depth, it achieves to become a really powerful biopic of Greek Freak's journey. Furthermore, Rise is beautifully filmed and it has amazing music which is highly influenced by African music. Before ending my review I would like to give kudos to the cast that even though their lack of experience in acting, they all deliver good performances. Keep it up Giannis!
This was good. Interesting story and I felt got better as it went on, but after recently watching Hustle, I far preferred that movie. This one is more suited to fans of basketball.

The main takeaway of this film is that when one family member wins, they all win. The Antetokounmpo family would do anything for each other, and that is quite apparent when watching. Viewers will come out of this film with a warm heart, and maybe even some tears in their eyes.

The inspiring true story of The Greek Freak, following the 'rise' of the family from Nigeria to the NBA, is unfortunately told via an unfocused screenplay that feels like a melodramatic Made For TV movie. The odd structuring shifts from the parents to children, skipping through the years for 20 minutes of setup before any sport appears (it's soccer); in the process, clearly demonstrating the challenges of making a biopic.

I wouldn’t exactly call myself the biggest Gianns Antetokounmpo fan. Me being a Boston Celtics fans, Giannis has been a thorn in my side of basketball fandom for far too long. But I respect his progression and how he’s made himself into one of the best players in the NBA today and a Champion. I was only acutely aware of the struggles he and his brothers faced growing up but not fully aware of the story. If half of the events of this movie are true then his journey is truly inspirational.
