This is a great collection of Helen's tracks from her earliest recordings(who knew she recorded in 1927!) right up to her R&B phase in the early 50's. The first tracks from 1927 fall into the classic womens piano blues style of Bessie Smith. Then there are some sides she recorded with the Basie band in the late 30's and early 40's. The last recordings fall into the R&B category with Helen belting out some great bawdy blues tunes. It's a wonderful overview of her career before she faded from view in the 50's and triumphintly returned in the 70's. But that's another story! This album features lots of horn parts and some great jump tunes. A perfect introduction to the music of Helen Humes.
