In this tense psychological drama, an emotionally unstable young woman and her brother drift from town to town. When a sympathetic motel maid takes pity on the girl -- and becomes romantically involved with her brother -- it could inadvertently spell doom for all of them.

Set in Florida but shot in Cuba (!), this sincere but uninvolving 1959 drama concerns a developmentally challenged young woman whose immaturity and innocently provocative behavior cause considerable problems for her concerned brother (Steven Hill). Notable mostly for the chance to see Elaine Stritch in a lead role as well as Sharon Farrell (billed under her real name, Sharon Forsmo) and Andrew Prine very early on in their careers.
Ed Wilson is having car trouble on a hot day in Florida, and finds his way to a sleepy motel to get some help. He is traveling with an attractive young woman. We come to find out that she is his sister Emily, and she has mental health issues (e.g. waking up screaming in the night if Ed's not there).
Elaine Stritch is a kindly waitress at the motel. She's a young widow, sweet on Ed, and he shares the rest of their sad story: Ed and Emily are basically drifters: childlike Emily is unaware of the effect she has on men, and if they try something they shouldn't, she becomes violent. Elaine Stritch tries to help.
