About the Author

Elmore Leonard wrote more than forty books during his long career, including the bestsellers Raylan, Tishomingo Blues, Be Cool, Get Shorty, and Rum Punch, as well as the acclaimed collection When the Women Come Out to Dance, which was a New York Times Notable Book. Many of his books have been made into movies, including Get Shorty and Out of Sight. The short story "Fire in the Hole," and three books, including Raylan, were the basis for the FX hit show Justified. Leonard received the Lifetime Achievement Award from PEN USA and the Grand Master Award from the Mystery Writers of America. He died in 2013.

Elmore Leonard wrote forty-five novels and nearly as many western and crime short stories across his highly successful career that spanned more than six decades. Some of his bestsellers include Road Dogs, Up in Honey’s Room, The Hot Kid, Mr. Paradise, Tishomingo Blues, and the critically acclaimed collection of short stories Fire in the Hole. Many of his books have been made into movies, including Get Shorty, Out of Sight, and Rum Punch, which became Quentin Tarantino’s Jackie Brown. Justified, the hit series from FX, is based on Leonard’s character Raylan Givens, who appears in Riding the Rap, Pronto, Raylan and the short story “Fire in the Hole”. He was a recipient of the National Book Foundation’s Medal for Distinguished Contribution to American Letters, the Lifetime Achievement Award from PEN USA, and the Grand Master Award of the Mystery Writers of America. He was known to many as the ‘Dickens of Detroit’ and was a long-time resident of the Detroit area.

I enjoyed the dialog of the characters and the writing was well-done, but except for the main female, I didn't like any of the characters. Considering that the book is written from the POV of multiple characters that I disliked, I just didn't enjoy reading it.

Elmore Leonard style reminded me somewhat of Robert Parker's style, but I enjoyed Parker's characters much better, even though they also tend to be flawed.

I picked up the book because I enjoy the TV series Justified and wanted to find the author who the show is based upon. I probably wouldn't read another one, and I'm disappointed about that.

"Killshot" is a taut, compelling tale involving a married couple who inadvertently witness a crime, and must then enter the federal Witness Protection Program. The criminals pursue them relentlessly, and the novel is written in the typical style of Mr. Leonard--great dialogue, scenic realism, and characters who live and breathe on the page. A wonderful crime novel from the king of crime novelists.

Whenever I read a novel that is sub-par, I find the best antidote is to read a couple of novels by Elmore Leonard. The characters are always fresh and cool. The dialogue is sublime. Don't know what I'm going to do when I finish all the novels he's ever written. Probably start at the top and read them again.

I've read approaching thirty of his books and the top five shifts continually however, along with Swag and City Primeval this book is a near-constant. Humane, funny, thrilling, scary. It's got everything trapped in a small story with a brilliant cast list. If you haven't read it yet I envy you.

I must admit I only bought this audiobook because Bruce Boxleitner performs it....

And I also must - a little bashful - admit that it took me 4 times of listening through the complete audiobook (3 CDs!!) before I could actually drag myself halfway away from his seductive voice to concentrate on the story.

But then I got really sucked into the story and I now need to read the whole book.
There is so much more I want to know about the protagonists and their backgrounds that I certainly will find in the complete book. I will be a setback that I won't get it read to me in full by Bruce Boxleitner but life is sometimes rugged.
I'm sure I will somehow get over it.
