A beautiful documentary about the beautiful soul, Kevyn Aucoin. Quite an emotional watch, I got a bit teary eyed on a few occasions. I loved the segment about the 90s supermodels, and having them all as interviewees was even better.
Happy that I watched this during Pride Month.
i wish i could’ve just watched kevyn’s footage without the present day interviews and analysis
footage of cher tina and liza the most
valuable parts of this
i love you kevyn
The home videos he shot with these celebrities is a testament to how much they must have trusted him - how silly and how much fun they are having before cell phone cameras made everyone guarded. The power Aucoin had to truly make women look and feel their most beautiful was so singular and unique. I wish he had found more power and peace with his talents (and that more people would have stuck by him at the end of his life)
I love him so much. Truly an incredible artist. So much glorious archival footage.
i had no idea who kevyn aucoin was until today and this doc was pretty decent!! though a sad and interesting doc of the most iconic make-up artist in the world, the discussions of his tragic and hard upbringing is quite vague. it seems like it only boiled down to his religious family, when there were clearly more things affecting kevyn mentally.
this might sound sick but i am really intrigued by stories of young and talented people who fly too close to the sun and unfortunately burn out. it's just so interesting to see how one can shoot to stardom so quickly and instantly fall off the pedestal as soon as they're established there.
also,, it might be because i am more interested in visuals but i was hoping to see more artistry and technical things in kevyn's work and it seemed like was brushed over but oh well can't have everything.
Uninspired in the same way most fashion documentaries are. Just like ‘McQueen’, it barely builds on the what to even start thinking about the how and, most importantly, the why.
This documentary feeds off the tortured genious underdog cliché without adding anything really relevant to it. Meanwhile it does not even explain why Aucoin got so big in the industry. He made women like Cindy Crawford pretty. So what. Weren’t there good make-up artists working before him? Was it that hard to make CINDY CRAWFORD pretty? Who knows! Maybe it was. Not that this documentary is interested in finding out.
Anyway the tapes are amazing. I would’ve much rather just seen a pastiche of that in a ‘Listen to me Marlon’ kind of way. There’s one where Linda Evangelista goes “average? AVERAGE? I’m Linda Evangelista and get that through your head” and I have no idea what the context for that is but it is pretty amazing.
Some cute video footage here and there but I don't think this really tapped into why Aucoin really took off or the larger context of the changing industry that boosted him to stardom which was disappointing-I had no idea there was another doc about him so I may check that out as well.
A little clumsily put together, but I liked the interviews with all of the women he worked with, and the incorporation of his home videos was interesting. It was like he made this documentary himself. A little time capsule of the supermodel era.
