Queens Drops Friday Doubleheader with North Alabama

The Short Story: Despite a multi-hit performance from senior Matthew Corlew, the Queens University of Charlotte baseball team dropped game one of the Friday doubleheader against North Alabama.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
-Queens jumped on North Alabama in the bottom of the first inning capitalizing on a costly Lions error. After Jake Barbour reached on a one-out error, senior Matthew Corlew made the visitors pay launching a mammoth two-run home run to left field.
-North Alabama answered right back in the top of the second with two runs on three hits. Bryant Loving delivered a two-out single up the middle to bring home a pair of runs.
-The Royals regained the lead in the bottom of the third inning as Dillon Lewis blasted a solo home run to left center. However, the lead would dissolve in the top of the fourth inning when the Lions plated four runs on six hits to grab a 6-3 lead.
-Queens turned to the bullpen in the top of the fifth inning and the Lions greeted the new arm with two runs on two hits. The Royals responded in the bottom half with three runs on one hit. Dillon Lewis and Matthew Corlew led off the inning with a pair of walks before an RBI single from Tyler Cotto brought home Lewis. Zach Weston followed it up with an RBI groundout to cut the deficit back to 8-5. After a Nick Alderfer walk loaded the bases, a wild pitch plated Cotto for the third run of the frame.
-Following an hour and a half rain delay, both offenses went scoreless in the sixth. However, North Alabama added onto their lead with two runs in the seventh. Following consecutive free passes, Jackson Ferrigno roped a two-run double to left field extending their lead to 10-6.
-Queens responded in the bottom of the seven with a run on two hits. After loading the bases with one out, Will Budnick brought home a run on an infield groundout. The Royals would continue to threaten, but a fantastic play by the Lions shortstop got the visitors out of the jam and hold the lead 10-7.
-For the second straight inning, the Lions returned the favor plating a run on one hit. After Frei Gehrig was hit by a pitch, Kyle Machado followed it up with an RBI double down the left field line.
 
BY THE NUMBERS
-Senior Matthew Corlew turned in a 2-for-2 game with three runs scored and two RBIs, including his fifth home run of the year. The outfielder has notched a hit in six of the last seven outings.
-Dillon Lewis stayed hot going 1-for-4 while blasting his 18th home run of the season.
-Jake Barbour, Tyler Cotto, and Zach Weston tallied a hit in the opener. Cotto and Weston added an RBI to their line.
-Starting pitcher Landry Jurecka turned in 4.0 innings in his 12th start of the season. The right-hander surrendered three earned runs and struck out eight batters. With his fifth strikeout, Jurecka moved into second place for punch outs in a single season.
-Jack Renaud turned in a pair of quality relief innings while striking out three Lions.

The Short Story: A late scoring outburst from North Alabama propelled the visitors to a series clinching win in game two of a Friday night doubleheader. The Royals bats were held in check to the tune of five hits on the night.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
-Queens jumped on the board in the bottom of the first inning. After consecutive singles from Dillon Lewis and Jake Barbour to open the inning, the Royals would load the bases on a Matthew Corlew walk. North Alabama traded a 4-6-3 double play for a Queens run.
-The Royals manufactured a run in the bottom of the third inning. Following a leadoff walk from Dillon Lewis, the junior stole second before advancing to third on a balk. Mattew Corlew roped a first pitch sacrifice fly to right field bringing Lewis home for the second run of the game.
-North Alabama responded in the top of the fourth inning with two runs on a hit. The Lions knotted the score up with a double steal to plate the tying run.
-After two scoreless frames, the visitors added a pair of runs in the top of the seventh to grab a 4-2 advantage. With a runner on second base and one out, Bryant Loving laced an RBI single up the middle to bring home the go-ahead run. Queens turned to the bullpen as Isaiah Bennett came into relief and the senior picked up a key strikeout looking. Jenkins would steal second base before Jonathan Lane sent a two-out RBI double down the right field line to extend the visitors' lead to 4-2.
-North Alabama broke the game open in the top of the ninth plating four runs on three hits. The biggest swing of them all came in a 3-2 count with two outs as Leighton Jenkins cleared the bases with a three-run double.
 
BY THE NUMBERS
-Junior Nick Alderfer led the offense with a 2-for-3 game. The infielder has recorded a hit in four of the last five showings.
-Dillon Lewis turned in a 1-for-2 game with a pair of walks. The Charlotte native has posted a hit in last 6-of-7 games. Lewis enters game three just three runs shy of tying the single-season program record for runs scored.
-Jake Barbour recorded a 1-for-3 evening as the rookie as knocked a hit in last 13 of the last 14 games.
-Mason Kelly rounded out the offense with a hit.
-Queens starter Carson Magill tossed 6.1 innings in his 10th start of the year. The rookie surrendered four runs on five hits while striking out six Lions.
