Pregnant Mom Derricka Patrick Shot, Killed by Gunmen While She Sat in Parked Car

A pregnant mother was shot and killed while sitting in a parked car outside her home in Englewood, Chicago, police have said. Her unborn child did not survive.

Derricka Patrick, 29, was shot multiple times by two gunmen who approached her vehicle on South Vincennes Avenue, South Side, and began firing about 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Chicago Police Department detective Brendan Deenihan said on Thursday.

Officers responded to an alert of gunfire and arrived at the scene soon after, Deenihan told reporters.

Patrick, a hairstylist who was three-months pregnant with her second child, was taken to University of Chicago Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead.

Video surveillance footage of the shooting, obtained by police, shows a car pulling up alongside Patrick's, two men getting out and opening fire, Deenihan said.

Police are appealing for help in identifying the gunmen and are offering a $15,000 reward for any information that leads to the arrest of the shooters.

Patrick is survived by her 9-year-old daughter, who is being cared for by Patrick's family, KABC reports.

The murdered mother was the youngest of five sisters and one brother.

Her sister, Dorothy Patrick, told the local TV station: "She was happy. She was happy because her daughter is nine, so she wanted a boy. She said her baby was her baby J."

Patrick had been on her way to her cousin's birthday party with her 15-year-old niece, when they stopped at her house to pick up a cake.

According to WFLD, the shooting occurred while her niece was in her aunt's house, picking up the cake.

While inside, her niece reportedly heard gunfire. By the time she returned to the car, Patrick was slumped over the wheel having been shot several times.

Her cousin, Devonta Anderson, who was celebrating his birthday that night, told KABC: "My heart is shattered in a million pieces."

"She was on the way to me and she never made it," he said.

An autopsy found Patrick died of multiple gunshot wounds, and her death has also been ruled a homicide, WFLD reports.

Speaking to the news outlet her mother, Christine Blanton, said: "My baby didn't deserve this."

"She didn't do nothing to nobody. For somebody to come and snuff her out and take her life like that, I'm just upset about it. I don't appreciate it."
