- Sune SZealand, Denmark54 contributionsLots of ups and downs.
There are several signs telling stories of the historical events of the park, but all of them are worn out to the point where you can't read anything - a real shame such a historical significant place!
No public parking places - you have to park at a nearby hotel.Written June 25, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. The parking is really screwed up and not in any way tourist friendly (like the rest of germany). We ended up not paying and hoping for the best..Written June 25, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. The third floor dedicated mainly to Hals and Rembrandt. There are two small portraits by Hals listed as property of State Art Collections Kassel but this time they were on display at Wilhelmshohe, nice surprise.Written August 16, 2021This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - LorettaStuttgart, Germany395 contributionsWe had been here years ago and were familiar with the park and the history so we did not visit Hercules or explore as much as we did last time--which you should do. Since they only turn on the water for the 5 features on Sunday and Wednesday we planned our visit to focus on that. First we parked at the Brandt Stoph park platz and bought the bus combo ticket . But then we walked to the Wilhelmshohe castle, thinking we could catch the shuttle in front of the Alte Wache restaurant-- which was a mistake. We did take the bus that stopped there and paid another 2 euros each. We had plenty of time and should have walked back but did not know what the crowd would be like. We arrived at 1:30 pm at the Kaskadenwirtschaft Grischäfer cafe which had a toilet and fresh brats.
We then walked up to the area below Hercules and above the Grand Cascade. The water began to flow at 2:30. We slowly headed along the grand cascade and then to the 2nd feature-- the Steinhofer waterfall which began flowing at 3:05. The crowd had grown a lot and the viewing area was much smaller. I would recommend skipping this feature and heading to station 3, the Devils Bridge, which was more interesting and very crowded--so good to get their early. Then head to the Aquaduct which is really cool before moving on to the Grand Fountain. The Wednesday crowd was huge but I imagine Sundays would be worse.
To see the whole park maybe take the shuttle up to Hercules and walk down exploring, take the bus back up and follow the water features down hill again.Written July 7, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. LeeLong Island, NY5,906 contributionsDuring our stay in Frankfurt, we took an excursion to Kassel, the charming city of Grimm Brothers, famous German fairytale writers. After about 1.4 hour train ride from Frankfurt Hbf to Kassel-Wilhelmshöhe Bhf and a short taxi ride from the station, we arrived at the road side of Schloss Wilhelmshöhe (Wilhelmshohe Castle) inside Bergpark. From there, we walked around the vast and beautiful park, and walked all the way up to a fairytale like Schloss Lowenberg.
Unfortunately, the castle was under major renovation, limiting our access to the inside of the castle. But the castle was beautiful from outside even with construction barriers. The castle would look much more romantic and charming upon completion of its renovation. After admiring the outside view and limited inside view of the castle, we walked down all the way to the place where we got off our taxi. There, we took a taxi to the train station for our next excursion destination, Eisenach before returning to Frankfurt. This castle is a must see attraction in Kassel once the renovation is over. [An advice for future visitors to this castle and Hercules Monument: Take a taxi to near the top of the park, and get off there for the visits to Schloss Lowenberg and/or Hercules Monument first. Then, walk down toward Schloss Wilhelmshöhe at the bottom of the park, because the winding uphill path to the castle was often quite steep and very very far.]Written August 21, 2020This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Marian VitaleAmsterdam, The Netherlands433 contributionsPlanned to visit a friend from the US who was in Germany for a few weeks and Kassel was the easiest place to meet. What a wonderful surprise that Documenta was happening, and also that we discovered treasures like this park and it's sculptures. We used the Izi app to choose a walking tour and it was delightful. The weather cooperated as well. I never imagined Kassel to be such a nice place but I'd definitely go back!Written August 29, 2017This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Stefan GWashington DC, DC1,074 contributionsWell, much to see about death. Though somewhat small, the museum is laid out over two floors. The items on display are quite interesting, and of course are about death. I did appreciate the exhibit about traditions from around the world on death and what it means to different cultures.
Note almost the entire museum is in German. One exhibition (I believe it was temporary) had English, if I recall correctly.
Staff very nice. Nominal entrance fee. Bathrooms available.Written December 7, 2020This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Allthough not big, there is hardly any intervention from people. And it shows. Very big oak trees, both alive and dead. The dead trees make for the best photo opportunities.
There are three paths to chose from. Yellow (squirel) 1.2 km, Orange (Oak-leaf) about 2.4 km and Red (Woodpecker) about 4.5 km. Because of the heat (38 celsius) and bringing our little boy along, we chose the yellow path. It was rugged enough and our small-wheeled kid-buggy could hardly handle the terrain. Another down-side is the parking lot. It’s on the other side of the little patch of woods. Yes, across a 70km road, in a bend, hard to see far enough. So, therefor I give the location four stars.
The location is best visited by car. There is a busstop, but I’ll be quite surprised if the bus stops more then once every two hours.
The zoo along the road could be a good place to go to if you have the time. We hadn’t.
The Saraburg itself lies further off and looks like a good place to just stop for a little while and enjoy the location.
We took a detour to Kassel along the L561, parallel to the B80, starting from the Saraburg Castle to Oberweser. We even took a back-road that wasn’t on the map at all. Our navigation sometimes had troubles to finding our exact location, so was a bit slow with giving directions. But it was a thrill to drive. Steep slopes on either sides and hardly a wide enough road to drive on.
The weird thing is that the L561 mostly has a speedlimit of 100 max. But that’s far too dangerous, because of sharp corners out of nowhere. But also te loose dirt and gravel can make things more interesting.
Keep your wits about you and keep concentrated on these roads.
And of you want a sniff of a Brothers Grimm scenery, this Urwald Saraburg is a good place to go.Written August 7, 2018This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. We learned a lot about the history of the bunker along with Kassel's history and role in World War II.
The fire department only offer tours once a month so you have to register with them beforehand.
It is about 10 degrees in the bunker even in summer, so you should bring a sweater/wear long pants.Written July 14, 2018This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
