A lot of my students are Arabic and I love my job and also my students and none of them are problematic at all. However recently I started working with a new student who immigrated here from Palestine and she's married to some rich Arabic guy. They live in a nice home in Maryland and she often brags about how rich her life is despite the fact her husband is always away "working". I honestly don't believe he's working all the time due to what she tells me but that's not what I came here to discuss.
Anyway we got on the discussion about hijabs and how she went to her son's school to speak with his teacher who's white. She said the white lady turns her head away from her whenever she speaks to her because the white lady do not like Muslims.
So to somehow show her that I understand I told her that I am black and people say things about my skin which is something I can't change.
That is when this lady interrupted me and said, "NO BLACK WOMEN HAVE ATTITUDES". "WHEN I WAS WALKING ON THE STREET IN NEW YORK, THERE WERE BLACK WOMEN YELLING AT ME BC OF MY HIJAB".
Looking back I am not sure why tf I told her ass sorry. She literally cut off my experience as a black women as if it didn't matter because other black women talked about her hijab. I kick myself each time I think about that particular moment in our conversation.
However, I did snap out of it and explained to her that there are black Muslims living in America. Some are immigrants and some are black americans. I educated her on the work of Malcolm X and his contribution to our community. She was making it seem as if black women don't know anything about hijabs so that's why we have attitudes about them. Like wtf??
I also noticed that she never called the white woman angry when she literally turned her head away from her when she was talking.
Immigrants come into America and accept all types of BS from white people.
I am not sure if I want to continue working with her. She's my private student that I tutor and not with the school I work for full time so I am going to drop her. I cant teach anyone who see Black women as angry people.
