Former England footballer and Strictly star Alex Scott leads congratulations as England win Euro 2022

Congratulations, Lionesses!

Former England footballer and Strictly Come Dancing star Alex Scott has led congratulations for the England team who won the Women's Euro 2022.

Beating Germany in a 2-1 win after extra time, the England team lifted the trophy for the first time ever in a Euro final, and Alex described how much it meant to the team.

"They're so relatable, they've all been on a journey, hardship, struggle, overcoming stuff, and those are role models," she said on BBC Sports coverage. "They're real, they follow their passion, their heart and this is where it's led them."

Alex also talked about how it was difficult to get stadiums to actually hold the matches, and they were "begging people" to host them and so many refused.

"In 2018 we were begging people to host in their stadiums for women's games for these Euros," she said. "So many people said no. I hope you all looking at yourselves right now because you weren't brave enough to do it."

Celebrities and fellow sports stars took to social media to congratulate the team.

Call the Midwife star Miranda Hart tweeted: "Crying. So brilliant. So important. Too emotional to articulate more. I am glad there are 7 year olds watching this who wanted to be a goalkeeper like I did! But didn't think it was 'appropriate' or 'allowed' to voice it. Thank you Lionesses. #Lionesses."

Singer Shania Twain tweeted: "You know these women will have had to fight for respect from the first moment they picked up the ball - Let's f**king go girls! @Lionesses #lionesses."

Former England player and pundit Gary Lineker wrote: "Football is a simple game. 22 women chase a ball for 90 minutes and, at the end, England actually win. Congratulations @lionesses. Fabulous."
