we will have a family trip to CA at end of June along with college visit.
Will have a lot of road trip SF - Yosemite - Monterey - Prismo Beach - Santa Babara - LA - SD.
I am debating which car to rent. I would prefer a SUV but also afraid of break-in due to the exposure of cargo space.
Should I just go for a Sedan?
I always prefer a sedan to an SUV unless the SUV is supplied with a good luggage cover.
Thieves have taken to smashing the back window and looking in the trunk by lowering the seat back in sedans these days so just try and limit the amount of time you leave luggage in a car unattended.
It is what it is nd you probably still have to be unlucky to experience a break in, I never have on my many visits. Just make sure there’s nothing visible in the cabin so it doesn’t look like an attractive target.

I assume you are picking up the reserved car after your SF tourism.
I see you have asked questions about LA, but I want to be sure you also have some basic information about other destinations in California
... Yosemite will still have some road closures so moost tourism will be focused on Yosemite Valley (more crowded) Get out on the trails early.
... Hwy 1 still has a closure. Spend enough time to explore Hwy 1 south from Monterey before returning north to Monterey, then detouring via Hwy 101 to the Central Coast.
... Pismo Beach to Santa Barbara is not too far, and you seem to have a long wish list for LA. Be sure there is enough time for LA tourism & school visits.

Actually I will have car in SF but it will be a short day and overnight at Berkley. We will not visit SF downtown.
