Having only been announced at this year’s Star Wars Celebration, new series Skeleton Crew appears to have already started filming. According to a new report by The Bespin Bulletin, the Jude Law-led Star Wars series actually set cameras rolling at the end of June in the same Californian studios that have housed every other recent Star Wars show including The Mandalorian, Obi-Wan Kenobi and Ahsoka.
Although the series is very much under wraps at the moment, Skeleton Crew is described as “a galactic version of classic Amblin coming of age adventure films of the 80s.” Co-created by Jon Watts, who recently ended his Spider-Man trilogy with the phenomenal Spider-Man: No Way Home, the series will have Star Wars regulars Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni on board as executive producers and is said to be set after the events of Return of the Jedi. While Jude Law is currently the only star attached to the project, its main protagonists will be children who “get lost in space and try to find their way back home.” Currently, casting is ongoing for four young actors to appear in the show.
As one of a number of new Star Wars projects heading to Disney+ in the next year or so, Skeleton Crew has certainly grabbed the attention with the casting of Law, and being set within the existing Star Wars timeline will be another series that is full of references and callbacks to the original Star Wars trilogy.

While there are many Disney+ Star Wars projects in production, including Andor, which debuts next month, and plenty in store for next year including Ahsoka, season 2 of Star Wars: Visions, The Acolyte, The Mandalorian season 3 and Young Jedi Adventures to name a few, Kathleen Kennedy is eager to star concentrating on making Star Wars a cinematic experience again.
The sequel trilogy, which came to an end in 2019 with The Rise of Skywalker, was a huge commercial hit, but did not please all fans of the franchise. Similarly, the prequel movie Solo: A Star Wars Story pretty much killed off the idea of any more movies in that vein after being negatively received by critics and fans, some would say a little harshly in retrospect. Due to that, Kennedy is now keen to explore the future and not the past in new Star Wars movies. While the previously announced Patty Jenkins helmed Rogue Squadron is in limbo, the main focus seems to be on Taika Waititi’s Star Wars project, and a new project linked to Marvel’s Kevin Feige, although it seems that both of these are still a long way off.
For this reason, it seems that Star Wars fans will have to make do with the Disney+ output for their fix of the series in the near future, and there is plenty of that to go around. It is likely that much more of this will be revealed at September's D23 Expo, where a Lucasfilm panel will detail the upcoming future of the Star Wars saga.
