  • Zendaya may now be too old to play Buffy, but she could play a new character in the franchise.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer gets rebooted with Zendaya as the title character in a fun new series of AI images. Airing for seven seasons from 1997 to 2001, Buffy the Vampire Slayer stars Sarah Michelle Gellar as Buffy, a mythical Slayer who does battle against the forces of evil. The Joss Whedon series, which is based on the 1992 film of the same name that he wrote, has now been off the air for quite some time, but work has been underway to get a Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot off the ground.

A new post from Buffy2ville on Instagram imagines what Zendaya, who is best known for Euphoria and the MCU Spider-Man trilogy, would look like as the lead of a Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot. Check out the art below:

The AI-generated images feature Zendaya striking various poses, including many in which she wields medieval weapons. A misty graveyard serves as the backdrop for the scene, which is in keeping with the tone of the original show.

Would Zendaya Make A Good Buffy The Vampire Slayer?

Why The Euphoria Actor Would Be A Good Choice

The Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot stalled out for several years after it was initially reported to be in development, but original series producer Dolly Parton recently revealed that work is still underway to bring a new iteration of the show to the screen. There are more questions about the reboot than answers at the moment, but Gellar has been clear that her time playing the iconic Slayer is over. With Gellar out, a new actor will have to step into the character's shoes, and Zendaya would be a strong choice.

Other actors in the Buffy the Vampire Slayer cast include: Alyson Hannigan, Seth Green, Nicholas Brendon, Anthony Head, David Boreanaz, James Marsters, and Michelle Trachtenberg.

Having now firmly shed her Disney star roots, Zendaya has announced herself as a major talent with her starring role as Rue as part of the cast of HBO's Euphoria. Outside of this, the actor also played MJ opposite Tom Holland's Spider-Man in the MCU. Her most Buffy-like role, however, can be found in Denis Villeneuve's Dune franchise. Zendaya plays Chani in the two films, and the glowing Dune: Part Two reviews single her out as a particular highlight of the sequel.

While Zendaya has proven herself an actor with impressive range, the one reason she might not be perfect to lead a new Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot is her age. Gellar's Buffy begins the show as a high school student, and Gellar herself said last year that "the metaphors of ‘Buffy’ were the horrors of adolescence." At 27, Zendaya might be a tad too old now to play a new Buffy, but that doesn't mean she couldn't play a new character in the larger Buffy the Vampire Slayer universe.
