Joseph Karl Stieler

(German, 1781–1858)

Joseph Karl Stieler was a German painter best known for his Neoclassical portraits of the Bavarian royal court. He is also commonly associated with his portraits of contemporary celebrities including Ludwig van Beethoven and Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. In his work, Stieler often played with light and shadow to subtly highlight the subject’s face. Born on November 1, 1781 in Mainz, Germany, he went on to study under Heinrich Füger at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts. He later studied under the Neoclassical painter François Gérard, who the artist later cited as his greatest influence, at his studio in Paris. Much of his work was featured in the Schönheitengalerie, or the Gallery of Beauties, which showcased a selected group of the most beautiful noble women in Munich. Stieler died on April 9, 1858 in Munich, Germany. Today, the artist’s works are in held in the collections of the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, the Neue Pinakothek in Munich, the Walters Art Museum in Baltimore, and the Finnish National Gallery in Helsinki, among others.
