The Big Picture

  • Ryan Gosling's The Fall Guy took the top spot at the domestic box office, beating out Challengers.
  • Star Wars: The Phantom Menace's 25th anniversary re-release for "May the 4th" added $8 million domestically to its lifetime gross.
  • Unsung Hero dropped five spots to #7 with just $3 million added.

It looks like Challengers won't be able to pull this stunt. This weekend, Ryan Gosling's (Barbie) new blockbuster The Fall Guy was able to take the top spot at the domestic box office. The movie pays homage to stunt performers and tells the story of a stunt guy (Gosling) who goes on a wild search for a missing movie star. The movie performed its way to the top and won this set from the Zendaya sports drama Challengers, which dropped all the way to #3 but still retains an impressive performance at the box office.

This weekend's numbers also proved that, despite its less-than-enthusiastic reception all the way back in 1999, Star Wars: The Phantom Menace still lives in the hearts of Star Wars fans — especially with the emblematic May the 4th date serving as an excuse to celebrate the film's 25th anniversary with a re-release of the George Lucas film in theaters. The trilogy starter managed to add $8 million to its all-time domestic run (as well as $6 more million worldwide), which took its lifetime gross to over a billion dollars. The adventure scored the #2 spot at the domestic box office, a heck of a performance for a movie that was hated by fans of the franchise for a pretty long time.

Even though it dropped two spots, Challengers is still strong at #3. The movie added over $6 million to its run, and its worldwide gross is currently at $52 million. Rounding up the top 5 are horror movie Tarot and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire as a standout six weeks in. This week, the kaiju blockbuster took home an additional $4.5 million domestically, and its worldwide run is now well past the $500 million mark. On the other hand, Tarot started at #4 with a $6.5 million gross. Even though it's a notable start, if the movie doesn't earn some word-of-mouth popularity it could see a significant drop and underperform at the box office.

The 'Civil War' Rages On

Alex Garland's Civil War has been seeing a steady drop over a month after its premiere, which is expected as new titles start coming in. The movie ended its weekend domestic run at #6 with an additional $3.5 million gross. However, the movie is already considered a huge win for A24, with its box office performance worldwide (now at $96 million) making it one of the beloved distribution company's top-earning titles.

The biggest freefall this weekend was from the religious film Unsung Hero. The Lionsgate title premiered at #2 last week and this weekend it dropped all the way to #7, with just $3 million added to its domestic run. Kung Fu Panda 4 is still battling its way through the top 10 and added $2.4 million to its domestic run. The animation ended the weekend at #8, but ever since its premiere nine weeks ago, it has managed to gross over $520 million worldwide.

Last but not least, Abigail and Ghostbusters: The Frozen Empire filled the #9 and #10 spots, respectively. For next week, Abigail might see a decline since it will become available digitally this week. Additionally, the box office numbers will be shaken up with the arrival of the highly anticipated sequel, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes. It'll certainly be a massive contender for The Fall Guy and Challengers.
