Spencer Bonaventure Tracy was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on April 5, 1900 to his parents, John Edward and Caroline (Brown) Tracy. He was the second son born to his parents. Spencer grew up in Milwaukee and when he reached the age of 18 he enlisted in the US Navy (around 1918). While he was serving during World War I, he had not fully completed his training by the time the war had ended. He received his discharge in February 1919, and returned to High School to complete his schooling and receive his diploma. He then went on to Ripon College in Ripon, Wisconsin to pursue a degree in medicine.
Tracy had always been interested in motion pictures and practiced reenacting scenes from the movies with his friends and neighbors throughout his childhood. At Ripon College, he began acting in plays and also joined the debate team. During one of his debates, he auditioned for the American Academy of Dramatic Arts and received a scholarship to the school. In April 1922, he left Ripon and began taking classes at AADA, graduating in March 1923. During this time he appeared in several plays, including one that went to Broadway.
He continued his blossoming career in theater with more plays both on and off Broadway. By 1930, he was well known for his performances and offered a role in the movies with Fox. He had made a few Vitaphone recordings but was apparently happy with his role in the theater. However, he had a son who was deaf and recovering from polio and needed the money for his care, so he signed a contract and began his acting career.
