Biography

Rt Hon Albert Spencer was a member of the aristocracy in England.

Known to family and friends as Jack, the Seventh Earl was a man of contrasts who earned the nickname ‘the Curator Earl’ for the conservation work he achieved at Althorp. He served as a captain in the First Life Guards during the First World War, but was wounded and removed from the front line. He was active in the Territorial Army for 43 years yet was also chairman of the Royal Society of Needlework, a trustee of the Wallace Collection, a Fellow of both the Society of Antiquaries of London and the Royal Society of Arts, and Chair of the Advisory Council of the V&A.
