r/heraldry - Question about the arms of the Duke of Buccleuch and Queensberry.

Hello. I have a question about the arm of the Duke of Bucchleuch and Queensberry. Basically they are quartered with 1) bastard royal Stewart 2) Campbell of Argyll 3) Douglas of Queensberry 4) Montagu (dukes of) and finally an inesturcheon of Scott. Now, the first quarter makes sense because the duke descends in male line from Charles II's bastard James. The arms of Montagu, Douglas, and Scott also make sense to me due to successive marriages with heiresses, and in fact the surname of the duke is still today "Montagu Douglas Scott". However I really cannot figure out where the Campbell arms come from. Any idea?

I dont have access currently but Burke’s general armory might have an explanation, i.e. “quarter 2, Campbell, from ————“ and cite the reason or person in the genealogy

I suspect it comes from the marriage of Francis Scott to Caroline Campbell. Francis was the eldest son of the second Duke of Buccleuch, but predeceased his father, also Francis; the title was inherited by his eldest son, Henry.

Caroline was the eldest of four daughters of the second Duke of Argyll. As her father had no sons, Caroline was (as far as I know) an heraldic heiress under Scottish heraldic law.

It's because they're the heirs of the Campbell Dukes of Argyll and Greenwich. Francis Scott, Earl of Dalkeith (heir of the the second Duke of Buccleuch) married Caroline Campbell, the daughter of the second Duke of Argyll and Greenwich (she was later Baroness Greenwich in her own right, but due to this titles remainder her Scott children didn't inherit it). The Dukedom of Greenwich became extinct on her father's death, making the Dukes of Buccleuch the heir of this branch of the Campbell family, whilst the Dukedom of Argyll passed to descendents of the first Duke's brother - and is extant in its own right.

Thank you! However, I must say I find very surprising that one would chose to revive quarterings they are entitled to but never actually used a century and a half later (according to Wikipedia the current arms were first used by the 8th and 10th duke of Buccleuch and Queensberry).
