A Nigerian court will hold John Lyon’s trial for kidnapping and robbery very soon.

The “Hushpuppi with no laptop” was detained by the police on suspicion of being a member of a kidnapping organization that was purportedly behind a number of high-profile kidnappings and robberies that took place in Bayelsa and other Niger Delta regions.

The suspect, who goes by the name John Lyon, rose to renown after joining the All Progressive Congress, a political party which currently controls Nigeria.

He is known as “Abuja big boy,” and his older brother, David Lyon, came close to winning the 2019 election for governor of Bayelsa State.

In the 2019 Bayelsa gubernatorial election, the elder brothers to the suspect, David Lyon ran unsuccessfully for governor on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The Supreme Court decided that his running mate, Degi Eremienyo Wangagra, submitted a forged certificate to INEC, invalidating his election a day before he was to be sworn in as governor. The highest court mandated that PDP candidate Douye Diri, who finished second in the poll, receive a certificate of return and take office as governor.

Prior to his arrest and subsequent exposure as a suspected mastermind of kidnapping and violent robberies on Saturday, John Lyon was well-known for displaying large sums of money on social media, urging his followers to “hustle,” and inspiring young Nigerians to work hard.

On social media, he also shared images of himself being guarded by police officers at an APC event and during a church service where he is seen singing and thanking God.

While giving millions to actors and musicians, he also implemented an interior design company in Abuja as a source of riches.

However, it was said that his mask had been exposed when he was located and apprehended by a top-notch police team in Abuja on Saturday.

Following his arrest, John Lyon was shown in viral videos kneeling on the ground, wailing uncontrollably, and pleading for mercy while wearing only his underwear and being handcuffed. He said that his wife had just given birth to a baby.

He admitted kidnapping while being interrogated, but claimed to have only taken two persons.

The man questioning him continued by recounting how John Lyons’ group had kidnapped him and demanded a sizable sum in exchange for their release.

Given the state of affairs, the case of John Lyon may possibly resemble that of Evans the kidnapper.
