The All-San Diego Section teams for spring were selected by a panel of media, coaches and advisers under the auspices of the CIF and San Diego Sports Association.

BASEBALL

Player of the Year: Grant MacArthur, Granite Hills

The senior infielder batted .440 with nine home runs and 24 RBIs for the Eagles. MacArthur hit .393 with seven homers and 28 RBIs last season as a junior.

Pitcher of the Year: Sam Garewal, Canyon Crest

The 6-foot-4, 215-pound senior left-hander was 6-2 this season with a 1.31 ERA. He pitched 691/3 innings and struck out 130 batters. Opposing hitters batted just .142 against him. As a hitter, he hit seven homers and drove in 18 runs. He has verbally committed to Northwestern.

SOFTBALL

Player of the Year: Sofia Mujica, Granite Hills

After finishing second in the state in home runs last season as a freshman with 17 to go with 30 RBIs, the sophomore catcher was walked 31 times but still hit .469 with 15 home runs and 24 RBIs. She scored 26 runs to help the Eagles win nine of their last 11 games.

Pitcher of the Year: Maya Loper, Otay Ranch

The 5-foot-10 senior pitcher led her team to the San Diego Section Open Division championship with an 18-5 record, a 1.17 ERA, 23 complete games in 24 starts and 238 strikeouts in 155 innings. Opposing batters hit just .132 against her. She batted .338 with seven homers and 29 RBIs.

An elite player who has committed to play collegiately at Arizona State, Williams played a full slate of high school golf and posted the lowest scoring differential in the San Diego Section. He finished fourth in the San Diego Section Championships, third in the Southern California Regionals and ninth in the State Tournament.

The 6-foot-3 Engels had nine kills, three blocks and three aces in the 3-1 win over Westview in the San Diego Section Open Division championship match. The Dons went on to beat Tesoro in the Southern California Division I Regionals before losing to Los Angeles Loyola. The Dons finished the season 27-5, winning 14 of their last 15 matches.

A two-sport athlete in high school, she also played field hockey for the Vikings.

The 6-foot-4, left-handed Grant is a five-star recruit who has committed to Notre Dame. He has 16 goals and led the Falcons with 36 assists as the team won its fourth straight San Diego Section Open Division championship, beating Bishop’s in the title match. A four-year starter, Grant also played football at Torrey Pines.

Track Athlete of the Year: Adren Parker, Helix

Parker won the 400-meter hurdles at the San Diego Section Championships, posting the best time of the day by .81 seconds. He anchored Helix’s winning 4x400-meter relay team to victory by 1.49 seconds. Parker placed fourth in the hurdles at the State Meet and the relay team placed fifth.

Field Athlete of the Year: Brandon Cheeks, Mission Bay

Cheeks was a four-time winner at the San Diego Section Division III Championships, winning the long jump (23-3), triple jump (45-0½), high jump (6-8) and 100-meter hurdles. His marks in the long and triple jumps were the second-best of the day. He went on to place 10th in the State Meet in the triple jump and 12th in the long jump.

Track Athlete of the Year: Aaliyah McCormick, Scripps Ranch

McCormick, who has committed to run at Oregon, blazed to a meet record in the 100-meter hurdles in the San Diego Section Championships, breaking a record that was set in 2015. She was DQ’d at the State Meet after a controversial bumping incident in her lane. A protest was later denied.

Field Athlete of the Year: Kennedy Clarke, Cathedral Catholic

A winner in the shot and discus at the Arcadia Invitational and at Mt. SAC, Clarke proved her worth at the San Diego Section Championships, winning both events. She placed fifth in the State Meet in the shot and 11th in the discus.

Player of the Year: Zach Pellouchoud, Canyon Crest Academy

For three years, the San Diego Section Individual Championship eluded Pellouchoud. Not this year, though, as he beat Adan Dorros of Bishop’s 6-3, 6-4 to take home the title. Pellouchoud also won his two matches in the Open Division Team competition, leading CCA to the championship. To top his season, he won his two matches in the Southern California Regionals as the Ravens beat Irvine University for the title. He will play next season at Cal Poly.

Athlete of the Year: Emily Lundgren, Eastlake

Bound for Washington State, Lundgren set a San Diego Section record in winning the 100-yard breaststroke at the Section Championships, clocking 1:00.96. She also won the Division I 200 IM, was part of the winning 200 medley relay team and the 400 freestyle relay team that placed second. She went on to claim the State championship in the 100 breaststroke, going 1:00.61 in the finals.

Athlete of the Year: Logan Noguchi, Torrey Pines

Noguchi had a spectacular day at the section championships. He set a section record in the 200 IM, swimming 1:48.58. He came back to set another section record in the 100 backstroke (48.36), breaking the mark by six-tenths of a second. He also anchored the 400 freestyle relay team that placed first in Division I and anchored the 200 free relay team that posted the second-fastest time of the day.

Pringle and Blyashov won the inaugural Beach Volleyball Championship, leading the Dons to the team title and finishing their season 10-0. Pringle, a senior, is headed to Stanford, where she’ll give up the beach game to concentrate on the indoor game. Blyashov, a junior, also has committed to Stanford. She, too, is an outstanding indoor player.
