When Bertie introduced the 1969 Divorce Act, he'd hoped to use it to break up the Edinburghs' abusive marriage. He hadn't expected the affair that Philip was having with Susan Ferguson, and when was discovered, Philip and Susan were promptly banished to the US.
Andrew and Sarah announce that they are betrothed to each other on Sarah's 16th birthday, much to Philip's unhappiness. Though Elizabeth had little issue giving Andrew permission to enlist in the Navy, she refuses to let them marry before he turns 18. Bertie tells them that they can elope over Christmas 1977, and have a ceremony in the Abbey in the Spring. Philip and Susan are invited. By the time the ceremony comes around, Sarah is pregnant.
Andrew is determined to hide the pregnancy from his father, while Sarah doesn't want to be barred from the Abbey due to her condition, and they vow to -- badly -- conceal the happy news from the public. Sarah's cousin, Diana, is jealous, and decides to make the announcement herself.
