True Detective: Night Country cast & characters
Before we get into it, the official synopsis for True Detective: Night Country reads: “When the long winter night falls in Ennis, Alaska, the eight men who operate the Tsalal Arctic Research Station vanish without a trace.
“To solve the case, Detectives Liz Danvers and Evangeline Navarro will have to confront the darkness they carry in themselves, and dig into the haunted truths that lie buried under the eternal ice.”
Liz Danvers: Jodie Foster
HBOJodie Foster plays Detective Liz Danvers, who much like the detectives portrayed in previous seasons of True Detective, is flawed and complex. Foster herself described Danvers as “Alaska Karen.”
“Liz Danvers is awful. She is ‘Alaska Karen.’ No two ways about it. She’s an awful, awful character. But you see why,” the actress said at the premiere (via People). “You see where that came from and you see what she’s struggling against and the turmoil that’s in her and the protectiveness and the love that she has for her partner in the film, her other trooper character.”
Foster played the iconic Clarice Starling in Silence of the Lambs. She’s also appeared in Contact, Panic Room, Taxi Driver, and, more recently, NYAD.
Evangeline Navarro: Kali Reis
HBOKali Reis plays Detective Evangeline Navarro, Danvers’ literal partner in crime and a character with demons of her own. As a part of the Indigenous community, she’s deeply impacted by local crimes against the region’s Native women and how it connects to the mystery at hand.
Reis is a famed boxer, having achieved world champion status in two weight classes before turning her talents to acting. A number of her credits include Catch the Fair One and Black Flies.
Peter Prior: Finn Bennett
HBOFinn Bennet joins the True Detective: Night Country cast as Peter Prior, who, according to Variety’s character descriptions, is “Liz Danvers’ protégé and apprentice – both for better or worse.”
Bennett has starred in Top Boy, Hope Gap, The Nevers, and Domina.
Rose Aguineau: Fiona Shaw
HBOFiona Shaw plays Rose Aguineau, a friend of Navarro’s who is rather mysterious and knows a thing or two about surviving the region’s harsh conditions.
Shaw has many major acting credits to her name, including Killing Eve, Andor, and the Harry Potter movies.
Ted Corsaro: Christopher Eccleston
HBOChristopher Eccleston plays Ted Corsaro, the local Chief of Police who is described as a “political animal with a long history tying him to Liz Danvers.”
You may recognize Eccleston as the ninth doctor in Doctor Who. He also appeared in 28 Days Later, The Others, and Thor: The Dark World.
Leah Danvers: Isabella Star LaBlanc
HBOIsabella Star LaBlanc joins the True Detective: Night Country cast as Leah Danvers, Liz’s stepdaughter who, following the death of her father, wants to find out more about her Inupiaq heritage – but Liz’s reluctance causes issues in their relationship.
LeBlanc’s other acting accolades include Long Slow Exhale, Pet Sematary: Bloodlines, and In an Instant.
Hank Prior: John Hawkes
HBOJohn Hawkes plays Hank Prior, Peter’s father and “a police officer with old grudges hiding under a quiet surface.”
Hawkes has also starred in Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, Eastbound and Down, Deadwood, and From Dusk Till Dawn.
Kayla Malee: Anna Lambe
Instagram/@anna.r.b.lambeAnna Lambe plays Kayla Malee, described as “a young nurse with little patience for anybody that messes with her family.”
Lambe’s other acting credits include Three Pines, Diggstown, Trickster, and The Grizzlies.
Julia Navarro: Aka Niviâna
HBOAka Niviâna plays Julia Navarro, who is looked after by her sister Evangeline due to her mental health struggles.
Prior to joining the True Detective: Night Country cast, Niviâna appeared in Borgen.
